Job summary

OnTrac in Columbus is hiring a Control Systems Engineer to maintain and optimize PLC and Warehouse Control System programs across the network. The role focuses on reliability, uptime, and safety, collaborating with Maintenance, Engineering, Operations, and OEM partners.

The ideal candidate has a bachelor's degree in a technical field, 4+ years in automation and controls for material handling, proficiency with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs, HMIs/SCADA, and interlocks, and willingness to travel up

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline or equivalent
  • At least 4 years of automation and controls experience for facilities, conveyors, or sortation equipment
  • Proficiency with PLCs (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell), HMIs, SCADA systems, and safety interlocks

Responsibilities

  • Keep automation running at peak reliability: troubleshoot and optimize PLC and WCS systems for conveyors and sortation equipment.
  • Build and maintain PLC logic (primarily Allen-Bradley/Rockwell) for reliable operation and fault recovery.
  • Implement improvements with engineering and OEM partners to enhance throughput and system consistency.
  • Support commissioning, controls validation, and integration testing for new deployments and retrofits.
  • Maintain accurate IO lists, schematics, and network diagrams to support operations.
  • Collaborate with site technicians to resolve faults, train on troubleshooting, and ensure safety standards are met.

Compensation

The expected starting base pay range for this position is $117,232 to $ 132,863 , with full potential base salary range over a successful candidate’s tenure in the position of $ 117,232 to $148,494 . Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, internal equity, and other job-related factors.

Schedule

Monday through Friday from 2:00pm to 10:00pm

Employment Logistics

The Control Systems Engineer supports the reliability, functionality, and uptime of OnTrac’s automated parcel handling systems by developing, maintaining, and optimizing PLC and WCS (Warehouse Control System) programs. This role provides real-time troubleshooting, supports controls design standards, and implements improvements that enhance throughput, fault recovery, and automation stability. This role works closely with Maintenance, Engineering, Operations, and OEM partners to help maintain a resilient, standardized, and scalable controls environment across the network.

The Must-Haves

Your Mission in Motion
  • Keep automation running at peak reliability: Support, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC and WCS systems for conveyor lines, sortation equipment, dimensioners, and other automated systems to improve uptime and stability.
  • Build and maintain robust PLC logic: Develop and maintain PLC programs (primarily Allen - Bradley/Rockwell) that ensure reliable operation and strong fault recovery behavior.
  • Implement improvements with engineering and OEM partners: Collaborate on controls revisions and software updates that improve throughput, recovery performance, and system consistency.
  • Support commissioning and integration: Assist with commissioning, controls validation, and integration testing for new automation deployments and retrofits.
  • Keep controls documentation accurate and current: Maintain IO lists, electrical schematics, network diagrams, and control panel layouts to support standardized operation and troubleshooting.
  • Enable frontline success and safe operation: Work with site technicians to resolve complex faults, train on basic troubleshooting, and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards (e - stops, lockout/tagout logic, interlocks).
