Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years developing industrial PLC control systems in manufacturing.
  • At least 3 years hands-on Siemens PLC programming experience.
  • Previous leadership experience mentoring Controls Engineers.
  • Strong knowledge of automation systems, controls architecture, and processes.
  • Ability to create enterprise controls standards and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Coach controls engineers and promote knowledge sharing across the org.
  • Evaluate emerging automation technologies and lead implementation when appropriate.

Our client, a leading industrial manufacturer with multiple production facilities across the United States, is seeking a Controls Engineering Manager to lead enterprise-wide automation initiatives and oversee a growing team of Controls Engineers. This leadership role is responsible for establishing PLC programming standards, driving automation strategy, and supporting manufacturing operations through scalable, standardized controls solutions.

This position offers a hybrid work schedule, requiring two days onsite each week at one of several major operating locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Controls Engineers while providing technical direction and project oversight.
  • Establish and maintain enterprise-wide PLC programming standards, ensuring consistency, scalability, and long-term maintainability across manufacturing facilities.
  • Provide technical leadership for PLC programming, system architecture, and industrial automation initiatives.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts through automation, standardization, and implementation of best practices.
  • Review internally developed and third-party controls solutions to ensure compliance with engineering standards and operational requirements.
  • Partner with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, and Capital Projects teams to support new equipment installations, system upgrades, and process improvements.
  • Develop troubleshooting documentation, programming standards, and technical training materials.
  • Coach and mentor controls engineers, electricians, and other technical personnel while promoting knowledge sharing throughout the organization.
  • Evaluate emerging automation technologies and lead implementation efforts where appropriate.
  • Build strong relationships with manufacturing leadership and provide ongoing technical support throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and system integrators during equipment specification, installation, startup, and commissioning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline; equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience developing industrial PLC control systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience programming Siemens PLC platforms.
  • Previous leadership experience managing or mentoring Controls Engineers.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial automation systems, controls architecture, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience developing enterprise controls standards and engineering best practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and automation systems.
  • Strong understanding of electrical schematics and industrial control systems.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Proven ability to lead organizational change and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 15% to support manufacturing facilities.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting multi-site manufacturing operations.
  • Background in continuous process or high-volume manufacturing.
  • Experience with capital projects, equipment modernization, and system integration.
  • Knowledge of industrial networking, HMI/SCADA platforms, and modern automation technologies.

This position combines office-based work with regular visits to manufacturing facilities. Candidates should be comfortable working around operating industrial equipment and in production environments while following all required safety procedures. Occasional exposure to noise, dust, heat, confined spaces, and industrial conditions may be required.
