Job Title: Control Software Safety Engineer

Working Pattern: Full-time

Working location: Indianapolis, IN or West Lafayette, IN (Hybrid Work Schedule)

Rolls-Royce is looking for a Control Software Safety Engineer to join our growing team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on flagship Rolls-Royce programs and play a vital role in solving some of the most complex and interesting technological challenges in the industry while being part of a global, multi-disciplinary team.

As a Control Software Safety Engineer, you will develop and maintain the Safety Cases for Electronic Engine Control and Monitoring Systems to ensure the design is single fault tolerant and meets the engine functional hazard rates and all applicable certification requirements. You will be responsible for analyzing software functionality, potential safety hazards associated with software, and producing compliance evidence to industry software safety standards. You will support full life cycle development and mentor junior engineers on processes, tools, and technical solutions. In this role, you will have the opportunity to travel up to 20% between Rolls-Royce sites and up to 10% other travel.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule allowing for remote and in-office days each week. Hybrid work arrangements are subject to change based on business needs and/or changes in company policy. All hybrid employees must have a secure, high-speed internet connection and an appropriate workspace that complies with applicable information security and confidentiality requirements.

What you will be doing
  • Collaborate with other teams and customers to develop electrical, electronics, and mechatronics control system safety work products such as: System Safety and Reliability Assessment, Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), or Common Cause Analysis (CCA).
  • Work with a cross-functional team to establish the highest standards of technical capability, quality, professionalism, and teamwork.
  • Provide and support engineering and process guidance, training, and create documentation.
  • Prepare and review engineering work products for technical documentation, quality, and completeness.
  • Resolve complex problems through the application of technical experience and knowledge.
  • Develop and communicate complex technical ideas and information in a concise and logical way.
Who we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, or Computer Science with 1+ years of product development engineering experience, OR Master’s degree in the same fields, OR PhD in these areas.
  • Experience with requirements management.
  • 2+ years of product safety engineering experience or related software development/system safety analysis.
  • Experience applying agile development methods.
  • Experience with military qualification and/or FAA certification of airborne systems.
  • Familiarity with standards such as ARP4754, ARP4761, MIL-STD-882, MIL-STD-1629, DO-178C, DO-254, AMCOM 385, and IEEE 1633-2016.
  • Experience with control system design and tools like Fault Tree+, Reliability Workbench, DOORS, Cameo Systems Modeler.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering and robust design tools and techniques with model-centric development approaches.
