Continuous Improvement Engineer

Permanent Spring Hill, TN, US

2 days ago Requisition ID: 1601

Ultium Cells, LLC. is a joint venture Lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing plant between LG Energy Solution, Ltd., and General Motors. This high-technology plant will have the latest in battery cell manufacturing technology.

Ultium Cells’ partners include LG Energy Solution, Ltd.; the world’s largest manufacturer of automotive battery cells, and General Motors; a global company committed to delivering safer, better and more sustainable ways for people to get around.

Job Description:

As a Continuous Improvement Engineer, the candidate will be a hands-on, individual-contributor technical resource responsible for delivering measurable improvement to multiple departmental benchmark targets, focusing on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). This is a non-managerial role: the candidate will develop and personally implement improvement projects on the floor, working cross-functionally across Production, Quality, Maintenance, and Safety, and will need to lead and influence outcomes through data, credibility, and relationship-building rather than positional authority. Candidate must be a self-motivated individual willing to take the initiative to continuously improve operations, roll up their sleeves alongside the teams they support, and be willing to work flexible hours/shift as projects require.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Personally develop, scope, and implement continuous improvement projects, working hands-on at the process/equipment level to deliver technical solutions to technical problems.
  • Identify, scope, and justify automation and digital-enablement opportunities, and support their hands-on implementation and validation.
  • Lead structured problem solving (PDCA, DMAIC, A3, 8D, 5-Why, Ishikawa) to eliminate waste and drive root-cause resolution, guiding cross-functional participants through the process without formal authority over them.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with partners outside the work group, including Safety, Quality, Production, and Maintenance, to align priorities and gain buy-in for improvements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute projects, influencing peers and technical partners (including strategic suppliers) through subject-matter expertise and clear communication rather than direct oversight.
  • Track project budgets/forecasts and contribute to cost reduction initiatives through hands-on execution of improvement actions.
  • Develop CI roadmaps and tracking tools to support prioritization, benefit validation, and long-term sustainment of improvements.
  • Personally implement and standardize improvements, replicate successful changes across similar processes, and update PFMEAs, control plans, and standardized work accordingly.
  • Participate in incident investigations and directly implement corrective/preventive actions.
  • Support KPI governance (SPQRCE metrics, OEE, scrap, downtime) by maintaining accurate data visibility to inform team decision-making.
  • Drive hands-on 6S, visual controls, and workplace organization improvements at the point of work.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in manufacturing engineering, and bring practical ideas back to the floor.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Experience with processing equipment, throughput, and comprehensive understanding of manufacturing processes, enabling effective hands-on design and implementation of process improvements.
  • In-depth knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies, fostering operational efficiency and waste reduction.
  • A strong understanding of safety regulations and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for all team members.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple hands-on projects simultaneously, with effective project planning in terms of resources, strategies, cost, and time, and the ability to meet project timelines.
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams without direct authority, using appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners and meet mutual goals.
  • Establishes a course of action to accomplish completion of the job and/or project, and is comfortable being the hands-on implementer of that plan.
  • Coordinates input from internal/external customers to better understand customer needs and/or perceptions.
  • Actively identifies new areas for learning and takes advantage of learning opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 to 3 years of experience with data analysis and statistical process control (SPC), enabling informed decision-making and process optimization.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment, demonstrating the ability to thrive in fast-paced settings. Experience with reliability and maintainability of processing equipment, standalone availability, and throughput.
  • Battery manufacturing experience.
