Job summary

State of Ohio – Department of Rehabilitation & Correction seeks a registered nurse to provide professional care to inmates, perform rounds, monitor vitals, and administer medications as prescribed. The role requires adherence to state regulations and precise documentation.

The nurse will also immunize, respond to emergencies, and maintain strict inventory of controlled drugs and equipment, contributing to safe, compliant healthcare inside the facility.

Qualifications

  • Requires current licensure as registered professional nurse in Ohio.
  • 6 months of experience as a registered nurse or as licensed practical nurse/paramedic.
  • Alternative qualifications may be substituted per union agreement while licensure remains mandatory.

Makes nursing rounds, takes and records vitals, prepares and administers prescribed medications and ordered treatment plans and administers immunizations, monitors restrained inmates on a timely basis and provides immediate medical attention to emergencies (e.g. administers first aid, arranges transportation and pertinent medical information). Completes required reports such as incident and accident reports. Maintains constant and exact inventory of all controlled drugs, medications, and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires current licensure as registered professional nurse in state of Ohio as issued by Board of Nursing per Section 4723.03 of Ohio Revised Code; 6 mos. exp. as registered nurse. -Or requires current licensure as registered professional nurse in state of Ohio as issued by Board of Nursing per Section 4723.03 of Ohio Revised Code; 6 mos. exp. as licensed practical nurse or certified paramedic. Pursuant to District 1199 Bargaining Unit Agreement effective June 1, 2003, in order to more effectively recruit Nurse 1’s (65512), Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Correction only & District 1199 agree to waive minimum qualifications for this classification, which calls for employee to have 6 mos. exp. working as a registered nurse. -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated licensure.

Major Worker Characteristics

Knowledge of professional registered nursing procedures; state & federal regulations, policies & procedures related to nursing; public relations; employee training & development*; inventory control. Skill in operation of medical equipment (e.g., stethoscope, otoscope, blood pressure cuff, EKG machine). Ability to deal with some abstract but mostly concrete variables; write meaningful, concise & accurate reports; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; demonstrate physical fitness. (*)Developed after employment.

Supplemental Information

“The final applicant selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to an appointment to test for illegal drug use. The State will decline to extend a final offer of employment to any applicant with a verified positive test result. Also, an applicant with a positive test result will not be considered for any position with the State of Ohio for a period of one year.”
