American Councils seeks Workshop Instructors in Washington, DC for the CBYX program. Instructors lead sessions with groups of 20–30 exchange students, guiding discussions on American history, government, and entrepreneurship while exploring DC’s landmarks.

This is a temporary consulting engagement. Instructors are paid $1,200 per workshop plus $400 training; housing for 2 nights and meals are provided during the workshop period. Training dates are TBA.

Qualifications

• BS/BA in political science, international relations, history, economics, government, education, or related field.
• Strong knowledge of American history, U.S. government, and current events.
• Experience teaching, facilitating educational activities, or guiding group discussions.
• Consent to and pass a background check to work with minors.

Responsibilities

• Work with 15–18 year old exchange students during workshops.
• Conduct workshop sessions and facilitate seminars across DC locations.
• Present information in a nonpartisan manner.
• Live on-site with students for the duration of each workshop.
• Assist American Councils staff with non-classroom responsibilities.

Position Summary

American Councils is seeking Workshop Instructors for its Washington, DC-based educational programs for Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program (CBYX) exchange students. The CBYX program (www.usagermanyscholarship.org) was established in 1983 and is jointly managed by the U.S. and German governments providing over 26,000 scholarships to youth.

CBYX provides competitively selected high school students with the opportunity to travel to the U.S. for an academic year to live with a host family and attend U.S. high school. As part of their exchange year, students participate in the American Innovation and Leadership Workshop in Washington D.C. Students learn about American innovation and entrepreneurship, U.S. history and government systems, and develop leadership skills.

Instructors work with a group of 20-30 exchange students during the workshop as they explore Washington, DC neighborhoods, historic sites, monuments, and museums. Instructors conduct workshop sessions in classroom settings, facilitate seminars held at locations throughout DC, and oversee guided exploration of museums, historic sites, and monuments.

Instructors are responsible for fostering student cohesion and presenting workshop curriculum in a way that encourages students to make connections and to spark interest in workshop themes. The ability to work with students from a wide array of backgrounds and foster discussion of government, history, and current policy in a non-partisan manner is essential to an instructor's daily tasks.

This is a temporary consulting engagement. Instructors are compensated $1200 per workshop, plus an additional $400 for the training period. Housing at the workshop hotel is provided for 2 nights (arrival to final content day) of each workshop. All meals are provided during the workshop.

Responsibilities

• Work with international exchange students ages 15 – 18 as they interact with peers, professionals and elected officials and explore Washington DC neighborhoods, historic sites, monuments, and museums.
• Conduct workshop sessions in a classroom setting, facilitate seminars held at locations throughout DC, oversee guided exploration of museums, historic sites, and monuments.
• Set aside personal viewpoints on issues to present information in a nonpartisan manner.
• Live on-site with students, staff and instructional team for the duration of each workshop (excluding departure travel day).
• Assist American Councils staff with non-classroom responsibilities, including evening room checks, as requested.
• Satisfactorily complete training conducted over two days the week of November 2, 2026 in Washington D.C. (exact training dates TBA)
