American Councils seeks Workshop Instructors for CBYX in Washington, DC. You will guide 20–30 exchange students through workshops, field trips, and seminars across DC, presenting content in a non-partisan way while connecting government, history, and policy topics.

You’ll live on-site with the group for the workshop, assist staff with non-classroom tasks, and complete a two-day training in early November 2026 in DC. This is a temporary consultant engagement with provided housing and meals.

Qualifications

• BS/BA in political science, international relations, history, economics, government, education, or related field.
• Strong knowledge of American history, U.S. government, and current events.
• Experience teaching, facilitating educational activities, or guiding group discussions.
• Knowledge of Washington DC’s National Mall Area.

Responsibilities

• Work with international exchange students ages 15–18 from CBYX and explore DC neighborhoods and sites.
• Conduct workshop sessions in classrooms, facilitate seminars at DC locations, oversee museum visits.
• Present information in a nonpartisan manner and promote student discussion.
• Live on-site with students and instructional team for the workshop duration and assist with non-classroom tasks.
• Complete two-day training in Washington, DC during the week of November 2, 2026.

CONSULTANT/CONTRACTORPOSITION SUMMARYAmerican Councils is seeking Workshop Instructors for its Washington, DC-based educational programs for Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program (CBYX) exchange students. The CBYX program (www.usagermanyscholarship.org) was established in 1983 and is jointly managed by the U.S. and German governments providing over 26,000 scholarships to youth.CBYX provides competitively selected high school students with the opportunity to travel to the U.S. for an academic year to live with a host family and attend U.S. high school. As part of their exchange year, students participate in the American Innovation and Leadership Workshop in Washington D.C. Students learn about American innovation and entrepreneurship, U.S. history and government systems, and develop leadership skills.Instructors work with a group of 20-30 exchange students during the workshop as they explore Washington, DC neighborhoods, historic sites, monuments, and museums. Instructors conduct workshop sessions in classroom settings, facilitate seminars held at locations throughout DC, and oversee guided exploration of museums, historic sites, and monuments.Instructors are responsible for fostering student cohesion and presenting workshop curriculum in a way that encourages students to make connections and to spark interest in workshop themes. The ability to work with students from a wide array of backgrounds and foster discussion of government, history, and current policy in a non-partisan manner is essential to an instructor's daily tasks.This is a temporary consulting engagement. Instructors are compensated $1200 per workshop, plus an additional $400 for the training period. Housing at the workshop hotel is provided for 2 nights (arrival to final content day) of each workshop.
