Job summary

Municipal Development in Albuquerque is seeking a full‑time Construction Inspector to review contractor work across streets, utilities, drainage and related projects, ensuring compliance with plans, specs, contracts and city ordinances, and to maintain project records.

Essential duties include inspecting plans, materials, traffic control, coordinating with contractors and project managers, responding to public queries, and preparing daily logs and test records.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in building/construction trades or engineering required.
  • Three (3) years of construction or construction inspection experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect a variety of construction projects relative to assigned area of responsibility; perform plan checking functions; ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations; interpret City approved plans.
  • Inspect and monitor new installation of all types of construction for compliance with specifications; inspect all materials brought to construction sites.
  • Provide accurate documentation of all construction inspection work completed including daily logs and change orders; maintain environmental permit records and testing frequency reports.
  • Coordinate construction activities with other agencies; act as a liaison between contractor and project manager on construction inspection issues.
  • Respond to requests and complaints from citizens regarding construction projects.
  • Perform various tests at construction sites including asphalt, concrete, soil and water for compliance with specifications; coordinate testing with City and private labs.
  • Verify traffic control placement for correctness and safety; coordinate with barricade inspectors as needed.
  • Inspect the work of contractors and builders to ensure contract compliance with drainage specifications and plans; issue violation notices as required.
  • Investigate complaints from the public and businesses; determine corrective action within regulations.
  • Report field changes that may require design changes; review material test reports.
  • Attend meetings, seminars and training programs; comply with safety requirements.

Education

Associate's degree in building and construction trades, or engineering

Job description

Inspect the work of contractors on a variety of construction relative to assigned area of responsibility including, but not limited to, traffic control, streets, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, driveway pads, water, wastewater, sewer and storm drainage projects; ensure compliance with plans, specifications, contracts and ordinances; and maintain records and prepare reports on projects inspected. This is the full journey level class within the Construction Inspector series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Construction Inspector I by the inspection of contract construction projects within a variety of areas including streets, concrete, buildings, wastewater, utilities, drainage and traffic control. Employees at this level receive instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Construction Inspector III in that the latter exercises functional and technical lead over lower level inspection staff and perform the most difficult and complex duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Inspect a variety of construction projects relative to assigned area of responsibility; perform plan checking functions; ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations; interpret City approved plans.
  2. Inspect and monitor new installation of all types of construction for compliance with specifications; inspect all materials brought to construction sites.
  3. Provide accurate documentation of all construction inspection work completed including; a daily log; source books that verify the quantities of work performed daily; documentation for change orders; justifications for changes to construction contracts; environmental permit records and the structure packages including the project testing frequency reports; work order close-out documents and reimbursement requests.
  4. Coordinate construction activities with other agencies; act as a liaison between contractor and project manager on construction inspection issues.
  5. Respond to requests and complaints from citizens regarding construction projects.
  6. Perform various tests at construction sites including but not limited to asphalt, concrete, soil and water for compliance with applicable specifications; coordinate all testing with City and private labs as needed.
  7. Verify traffic control placement for correctness and safety; coordinate with barricade inspectors as needed.
  8. Inspect the work of contractors and builders to insure contract compliance with pre-approved drainage specifications and plans, regulations and ordinances for arroyos, pavement, concrete work, water, sewer, waste water, drainage, buildings and other structures; issue violation notices, or citations as required.
  9. Investigate complaints received from the general public and various businesses; determine corrective action to be taken within established regulations and ordinances.
  10. Report field changes that may require design changes; review material test reports.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Attend meetings, seminars and training programs.
  2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  3. Comply with local, state and federal safety program requirements.

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in building and construction trades, or engineering;

and

Three (3) years of construction or construction inspection experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Environmental:

Office and construction site environment; travel from site to site; exposure to computer screens, heat, cold, inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
