Reports To: Wood Memorial High School Principal
Position Overview
Wood Memorial is seeking a highly skilled and motivated educator to build and lead our Construction Trades - Carpentry program. This role is responsible for implementing the Indiana Next Level Programs of Study (NLPS), designed to prepare students for high-wage, high-demand careers in the construction industry. The instructor will guide students through a rigorous four-course sequence, from foundational principles to advanced carpentry framing and finishing, while facilitating the attainment of industry-recognized certifications.
Key Responsibilities
NLPS Curriculum Delivery:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum based on Indiana Academic Standards for the following NLPS courses: Principles of Construction Trades (7130), Construction Trades: General Carpentry (7123), Construction Trades: Framing and Finishing (7122), and Construction Trades Capstone (7242).
- Provide hands-on instruction in job site safety, tool use (hand and power tools), blueprint reading, and construction mathematics.
- Oversee lab experiences involving the layout and construction of floor systems, wall systems, ceiling joists, roof framing, and basic stair layout.
- Integrate instruction on building envelope systems, thermal and moisture protection, and interior finishing techniques.
Certification and Dual Credit Management:
- Prepare students to successfully earn industry-recognized credentials of value (COV)
- Collaborate with postsecondary partners to facilitate dual credit opportunities aligned with the Building Construction Technology pathway.
Shop and Laboratory Management:
- Maintain a safe, orderly, and professional shop environment, ensuring all equipment is properly maintained and meets safety standards.
- Monitor and manage the inventory of construction materials and supplies.
- Direct students in real-world project-based learning and embedded work-based learning (WBL) experiences.
- Collaborate with industry partners to facilitate work-based learning experiences.
General Duties:
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and competency attainment.
- Participate in school-wide events and professional development, and uphold all East Gibson School Corporation policies.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Technology Education, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Certification: Valid Indiana teaching license in Technology Education (5-12) or eligibility for an Indiana Workplace Specialist License in Building Trades based on 3-5 years of relevant industry experience.
- Expertise: Strong knowledge of Indiana NLPS standards.
- Skills: Proficiency in carpentry, framing, finishing, and basic residential electrical/concrete work.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to engage in physical activities required for teaching construction, including demonstrating the use of power tools, climbing ladders, and participating in on-site builds.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy building materials (e.g., lumber, drywall) and construction equipment.
