Job summary

Marcus Construction Co., Inc. is seeking a traveling Construction Superintendent to oversee all aspects of multiple project sites.

Job description

The Construction Superintendent is a traveling position that reports to the General Superintendent. This position oversees all aspects of the construction project, performs general functions inherent in all supervisory field positions, ensures assigned construction operations and subcontractors' performance are in compliance with specifications, schedules and budgets, develops site logistics plans, performs daily inspections of work performed, and acts as liaison and coordinator between all project stakeholders. This position coordinates deliveries with suppliers, schedules inspections appropriately, and ensures that all design specifications, quality assurance, and safety standards are met. The Superintendent maintains a relentless focus on meeting and exceeding customer needs and expectations, delivers on promises, and proactively promotes our core values. The successful candidate for this position can manage small or medium teams, and projects of moderate complexity.

Essential Job Functions
  • Promote and enforce Marcus Construction safety requirements, OSHA standards, and project-specific safety procedures for employees, subcontractors, suppliers, and site visitors.
  • Lead daily field operations, including subcontractor coordination, inspections, deliveries, manpower, equipment, site logistics, and project sequencing.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate short-interval and look-ahead schedules; identify constraints and coordinate recovery plans when needed.
  • Lead daily field scrum meetings to review safety, daily work plans, manpower, constraints, deliveries, inspections, quality expectations, and coordination needs.
  • Lead weekly subcontractor coordination meetings to review upcoming work, schedule commitments, manpower, safety, quality, RFIs/submittals, procurement constraints, logistics, and action items.
  • Serve as the primary onsite representative of Marcus Construction, maintaining professional communication with owners, design teams, inspectors, subcontractors, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate and timely project documentation, including daily logs, manpower, safety observations, inspections, progress photos, deliveries, weather impacts, site visitors, and material/equipment status in Procore or other designated systems.
  • Review drawings, specifications, submittals, RFIs, and contract documents to identify discrepancies, constructability concerns, and coordination issues; promptly communicate potential impacts to the Project Manager.
  • Lead field quality control by verifying work-in-place against approved documents and Marcus Construction standards; document deficiencies and ensure timely corrective action.
  • Hold subcontractors accountable for safety, quality, manpower, schedule commitments, site cleanliness, material staging, and completion of assigned work.
  • Monitor field activities that may impact cost, including labor productivity, equipment use, rentals, field tickets, T&M work, material deliveries, and subcontractor scope changes.
  • Coordinate required inspections, testing, permits, safety documentation, and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Support project closeout, including punch list completion, final inspections, commissioning, owner training, turnover documentation, warranty items, and resolution of incomplete or deficient work.
  • Lead and mentor field personnel while promoting a positive, productive work environment aligned with Marcus Construction's core values.
  • Maintain a practical understanding of construction means, methods, tools, and equipment, and assist with field activities when appropriate.
  • Travel to and remain assigned to project sites as required by project needs.

Position Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management or related field preferred
  • 3-5 years in the commercial, industrial, or agriculture construction industry
  • Proven ability to manage projects and identify key issues in moderately complex situations with progressively increasing responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to
    • Understand project scheduling and cost control
    • Read and understand project owner specifications and engineering drawings
    • Meet deadlines and put in the time needed to get the job done
    • Work independently as well as part of a team
    • Effectively communicate with team members, owners, subcontractors, and suppliers
    • Maintain highly confidential and proprietary information
  • Effective written and oral communication and comprehension skills
  • Preferred technology skills - experience utilizing:
    • Industry-specific software, i.e. Procore, Outbuild, etc.
    • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies
  • Effective organization and time management skills
  • Possess a valid driver's license and proof of insurance
  • OSHA 30 and SWPPP certification preferred
Physical Demands/Working Environment

The physical demands described here represent those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, climb stairs and ladders, push/pull, squat, crouch, crawl, and manual dexterity and physical strength to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Employee must be able to enter the cab of a vehicle that is 3.5 feet (or more) off the ground; be able to sit in the operator's seat of equipment and safely reach all pedals, switches, levers, buttons, etc. required to safely operate the equipment, and have an adequate field of vision of all instruments, gauges, warning lights, as well as an acceptable field of vision out of the windows and/or mirrors. There will be frequent exposure to moderate, and occasionally loud, noise levels. For safety reasons, the candidate must be able to communicate effectively in this moderate to loud environment.

Work is performed on construction job sites which may expose the employee to dirt, dust, uneven surfaces, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme temperatures and humidity. In addition, employees must be comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and moving around prospective or current project sites. This includes walking on uneven surfaces and walking long distances.
