Job description

The Construction Site Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day coordination and supervision of Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County construction sites. This position ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to approved plans, quality standards, schedules, and Habitat requirements.

The Construction Site Supervisor serves as the primary on-site leader for construction staff, subcontractors when applicable, volunteers, and future homeowners completing sweat-equity hours. This role combines hands-on construction knowledge with leadership, organization, teaching, and the ability to work effectively with individuals who have a wide range of construction experience—from skilled tradespeople to first-time volunteers.

The Construction Site Supervisor works closely with the Director of Construction to keep projects moving forward, identify problems early, maintain safe and organized job sites, and ensure Habitat homes are built with quality and stewardship in mind.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Job Site Leadership

• Lead and coordinate daily activities on assigned residential construction sites.
• Translate construction plans, schedules, and direction from the Director of Construction into daily work assignments.
• Assign and prioritize work for construction staff, volunteers, future homeowners, and other individuals working on the site.
• Monitor daily progress and communicate schedule concerns, delays, material needs, or other issues to the Director of Construction.
• Coordinate on-site activities with subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and other project partners as appropriate.
• Maintain an organized, professional, and productive job site.
• Help identify potential problems before they affect the project schedule, budget, quality, or safety.

Construction & Quality

• Perform and supervise residential construction activities throughout various stages of home construction.
• Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and other project documents.
• Ensure work is completed according to plans, applicable building codes, manufacturer requirements, and Habitat quality standards.
• Inspect work in progress and address quality concerns promptly.
• Protect Habitat materials, tools, equipment, and completed work from unnecessary damage or waste.
• Promote responsible use of materials and minimize construction waste.
• Assist with material planning and communicate upcoming material and equipment needs to the Director of Construction.
• Welcome, orient, and provide on-site directions to volunteers participating in Habitat construction activities.
• Teach construction tasks in a patient, understandable, and safety-conscious manner.
• Match work assignments to the skill and experience level of volunteers while providing opportunities to learn new skills.
• Provide guidance and supervision to future homeowners completing required sweat-equity hours.
• Create a positive and respectful experience while maintaining appropriate expectations for safety, productivity, and quality.
• Ensure volunteers and future homeowners understand job-site rules, proper tool use, required personal protective equipment, and assigned tasks.
• Recognize when an individual should not perform a particular task due to safety, skill level, or site conditions and redirect them appropriately.

Safety

• Serve as the on-site leader for construction safety.
• Conduct or assist with daily safety briefings and job-site orientations.
• Ensure required personal protective equipment is used, and safety procedures are followed.
• Maintain clean and orderly work areas and address unsafe conditions immediately.
• Stop work when an unsafe condition or activity is identified.
• Report accidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, and significant safety concerns according to organizational procedures.
• Ensure tools and equipment are used appropriately and safely.

Project Documentation & Buildertrend

• Use Buildertrend to access and maintain project information as required.
• Update assigned project information, including schedules, daily logs, photos, notes, task completion, and other construction documentation.
• Communicate project progress and field conditions accurately and timely.
• Maintain appropriate documentation related to inspections, site activities, and project milestones.
• Training on Buildertrend will be provided; candidates must be willing and able to learn and consistently use the system.

Tools, Equipment & Site Management

• Ensure tools and equipment are properly used, secured, maintained, and returned to appropriate storage locations.
• Monitor job-site inventory and communicate material, tool, and equipment needs.
• Coordinate delivery and placement of materials on assigned sites.
• Maintain secure job sites at the end of each workday.
• Operate Habitat vehicles, trailers, tools, and construction equipment as authorized and appropriately trained.

LEADERSHIP & DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY

The Construction Site Supervisor is expected to make routine field decisions necessary to keep assigned projects moving safely and efficiently.

The Construction Site Supervisor has authority to:

• Direct daily work on assigned construction sites.
• Assign and reassign work based on project needs.
• Stop unsafe work or activities.
• Correct work that does not meet quality expectations.
• Direct volunteers and future homeowners to appropriate activities.
• Coordinate routine field activities with subcontractors and vendors.
• Escalate significant schedule, cost, personnel, safety, or quality issues to the Director of Construction.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Demonstrated experience in residential construction or a closely related field.
• Working knowledge of residential construction methods, tools, materials, and job-site practices.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
• Strong understanding of construction safety practices.
• Ability to organize and lead multiple individuals and activities on an active construction site.
• Ability to communicate effectively with employees, volunteers, future homeowners, subcontractors, vendors, and community partners.
• Ability to teach construction tasks to individuals with little or no construction experience.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make sound decisions in the field.
• Basic computer and mobile-device proficiency.
• Willingness and ability to learn and use Buildertrend and other organizational technology.
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Preferred

• Experience supervising residential construction projects or crews.
• Experience working with volunteers, apprentices, students, or individuals learning construction skills.
• Familiarity with Buildertrend or similar construction project management software.
• OSHA or other construction safety training or certification.

PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

This position regularly works on active residential construction sites and requires the ability to:

• Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, reach, and perform construction-related activities for extended periods.
• Safely use ladders, hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment.
• Lift and carry construction materials and equipment consistent with job requirements.
• Work around construction noise, dust, uneven terrain, and changing job-site conditions.
• Travel between Habitat construction sites and facilities as required.
