Job summary

Turner Construction invites college students to apply for an internship opportunity to gain hands-on experience in Environmental Health and Safety at our Des Moines area locations. The role focuses on assisting with safety programs on construction projects or office sites.

During the internship you will learn to identify hazards, support safety trainings, and maintain safety records, while contributing to a diverse, inclusive, and supportive workplace environment.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a college/university degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Engineering, or related field with at least 1 year completed.
• Basic knowledge of safety and environmental principles and techniques.
• Professional verbal and written communication skills.
• Willing to work standard business hours and overtime as needed.
• Demonstrate leadership, volunteerism, or community involvement.
• Able to work independently with supervision and in a team environment.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and data entry.

Responsibilities

• Assist with implementing safety programs on construction projects or office locations.
• Identify and report safety violations and imminent hazards.
• Coordinate safety duties for committees, preplanning, and tool box talks.
• Coordinate safety training and orientations.
• Review subcontractor safety programs for compliance with policy.
• Promote safe work practices per regulations and owner requirements.
• Assist with drug screening program administration.
• Assist with preconstruction meetings and documenting meetings.
• Assist with site inspections and develop inspection summaries.
• Maintain safety records (hazards, training, OSHA logs, MSDS).
• Support worker orientation and record participation.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
