This position will provide risk engineering evaluation and technical consultation for AXA XL’s Construction Property products (Builders Risk, Master Builders Risk and Contractor’s Block). This position requires application of a robust technical background and practical experience with commercial construction projects to identify and mitigate builders risk exposures for a broad range of project types and customers.
A primary function is to assist underwriting in the selection of new and renewal Construction Property commercial insurance accounts. You will assist underwriting and insurance management in making decisions by evaluating risks, analyzing data, identifying loss exposures and preparing reports. A second primary function is to provide risk management and construction consultation services to our insureds to help them minimize potential loss exposures.

What will your essential responsibilities include?
- Leverage AXA XL’s risk engineering tools and services to improve customer risk and general account management of customers who intend to purchase insurance products such as Builders Risk.
- Developing and maintaining positive business partner, broker and customer relationships.
- Delivering high-quality risk consulting services that include remote and onsite customer and prospective risk assessments of construction company operations and projects. Risk Engineers must be able to identify construction exposures and program risk control gaps to form the basis of risk mitigation recommendations.
- Produce self-directed written, technical reports that analyze a projects builders’ risk. Prospect analyses are utilized internally to form the basis of underwriting, claims and other insurance decisions to identify and manage risk.
- Assisting customers by giving possible recommendations on project specific QA / QC plans, water intrusion prevention / mitigation plans, crane management programs, Hot Work procedures and weather emergency action plans.
- Participate in marketing efforts to showcase AXA XL and Risk Engineering, building credibility with internal and external customers while promoting a range of fee services that support risk mitigation efforts.
- Leverage specialty groups and expertise as needed and conduct advanced training presentations on specific risk topics for current and prospective clients and internal business partners.
- Complete pre-underwriting (desktop) Risk Quantitative Reports (RQRs). Requires review of all submission documents and translation of the information into a concise description of the risk, identification of elevated loss exposures, and potential mitigation actions with development of Maximum Probable Loss scenarios for the Underwriter’s use in pricing the prospect.
- Coordinate and conduct field survey visits to insured projects to assess exposures and contractor controls. Provide risk consulting advice for exposures observed during the survey. Prepare comprehensive written reports of the survey to Underwriting and the Insured.
- Provide input to underwriting as needed to help leverage the deal.
- Develop “white papers” and articles covering current risk exposures and recommended mitigation plans.
- Participate in internal project teams to improve efficiency, workflow, and products.
- This position is a remote (work from home) position that will service the US and occasionally Canada. Travel is anticipated to be 25 – 30% under normal environmental conditions. Candidate must be located in surrounding area of Denver, Phoenix or Las Vegas.
This role reports to the Risk Engineering Manager for Property / Builders Risk.
We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills :
Required Skills and Abilities :
- Extensive relevant construction industry management experience. Advanced level experience in the management / oversight of complex construction projects, industry trends and emerging risks specific to the energy-sector, mass timber, tunneling / hydro, and commercial / residential 4-wall construction, and civil works projects experience (bridge construction, highway, rail)
- Experience with Data Center and Mass Timber construction is desirable.
- Experience in energy projects ( solar panel installations, geothermal power plants, hydroelectric dams, biomass power plants, power transmission / communication lines, and energy storage facilities).
- Robust working knowledge and understanding of entire construction project lifecycle, particularly regarding management and execution of professional related controls, such as contracting procedures, design management, water infiltration and mold prevention, construction planning, engineering and scheduling. Robust working knowledge of fire suppression, building classifications.
- Advanced level experience with analyzing geotechnical risk, various natural catastrophe exposures, project schedules including delay and impact analysis, supply chain impacts, and identifying and calculating estimated maximum loss scenarios is preferred for the role.
- Ability to apply construction industry experience to a broad range of customers and projects, consult effectively on a broad range of controls, and identify exposures / assess controls on complex construction accounts is required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Communicates effectively with broad range of underwriting and customer partners. The successful candidate listens effectively, assimilates complex information and makes sound assessments / conclusions based on review of written procedures, documents, discussions, and observations.
- Excellent leadership skills; experience working in both self-directed and team environments.
- Makes technical information and recommendations understandable to broad range of audiences. Communicates in a manner that influences others to accept and take action on recommendations.
- The successful candidate will be a self-starter, continually looking towards individual development. Must be capable of managing their schedule and resources, continually assessing workload considering business priorities and directing their own efforts accordingly while working in a remote environment.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team, proactively across lines of business, and effectively with internal and external partners on special projects and furthering industry and business goals.
- Valid, clear driver's license required. Travel by airplane is also required.
