Description

The Inland Marine Construction Risk Engineer supports underwriting and client service for Master Builder's Risk (MBR) and Project Builder's Risk (PBR) policies by evaluating and controlling construction-related exposures. The engineer plans, coordinates, and delivers field risk engineering services to contractors, project owners, and other stakeholders. This role supports profitable account acquisition and retention by identifying construction risk hazards, recommending controls, and enhancing customer relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

Service Planning & Delivery:

  • Develops and executes risk control service strategies for
  • assigned MBR and PBR accounts. Coordinates site visits, construction progress
  • reviews, and contractor safety audits to ensure delivery aligns with
  • underwriting expectations and customer goals.

Risk Assessment:

  • Performs field assessments of civil, commercial, and
  • infrastructure construction projects, evaluating site security, fire
  • protection, wind/flood exposure, scaffold, and crane safety, structural
  • stability, and water intrusion risk.

Client Engagement:

  • Builds strong relationships with clients, brokers, and
  • internal partners. Communicates findings and risk mitigation strategies clearly
  • to project managers, site supervisors, and insurance stakeholders.

Underwriting Support:

  • Provides technical construction risk reports, major loss
  • source analysis, and exposure evaluations to support new business and renewals.
  • Advises underwriters on adequacy of site controls, contractor safety programs,
  • and project documentation.

Data & Stewardship Reporting:

  • Tracks service delivery against project milestones, loss
  • trends, and coverage expectations. Delivers stewardship reports to insureds,
  • demonstrating improvements in risk profile and claims prevention.

Training & Best Practices:

  • Provides training and resource guidance to insured
  • clients on builder’s risk best practices, including temporary fire protection,
  • theft prevention, and severe weather preparation. Develops and delivers
  • internal training on emerging construction hazards and mitigation strategies.

Process Improvement:

  • Identifies trends in loss drivers across projects and
  • designs field programs or consultative products to address systemic risks.
  • Supports continuous improvement in inland marine engineering deliverables.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Construction
  • Management, Occupational Safety, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in construction risk control, engineering, or site safety-preferably with builder's risk exposure.
  • Strong understanding of construction means and methods, risk mitigation techniques and project delivery models.
  • Familiarity with national building codes, construction standards, and contractor safety best practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical reporting and customer interaction.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines across multiple projects and stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel regionally to construction sites (up to 50%).
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated abilities in leadership, planning, relationship building, consulting, customer service, and communications (particularly presentations, persuasion, and writing)
  • Advanced knowledge of loss prevention principles, practices and core service capabilities as they relate to performance and profitability
  • Demonstrated ability to retrieve and enter information using various proprietary software applications and create/modify documents and spreadsheets using Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge and skills required are normally acquired through a bachelor's degree with coursework in math, engineering or related areas (or equivalent), a minimum 8 years relevant experience in Risk Control or progressive safety and health field, and an advanced degree and/or professional certification in one or more of the following areas: CSP, ARM, CRM, CPCU, CIH, or CPE
  • Travel may be required
