Department Overview

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response. This position is within the In-Line Inspection department which supports the cleaning and inspection of transmission lines for the whole gas transmission territory.

Position Summary

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has years of experience representing employees at PG&E and is subject to collective bargaining.

The Construction Operator- GC position is an intermediate role within the Gas Transmission & Distribution General Construction team, offering advancement opportunities for motivated individuals who perform successfully. Work is predominantly outdoors in all weather conditions and is highly physical, supporting SCADA construction.

Employees will be required to complete hazmat training, respirator fit testing, and obtain heavy equipment certifications. The role involves mobility, working safely around large equipment and above-ground piping, operating pneumatic, hydraulic, and battery-operated tools, and extensive travel to support projects.

The position is a General Construction role, requiring travel and transfer to a new headquarters upon request across the entire PG&E service territory, with no guarantees on the duration away from home. The individual must be able to drive safely, work extended hours, travel 100%, and wear company-provided PPE. The position is headquartered in Oakland but will support the entire PG&E territory.

This is a DOT-covered classification and is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

Starting wage is $53.42/hour, based on local factors, skills, experience, and collective bargaining agreements.

Responsibilities
  • Perform carpenter work such as form work, scaffolds, sawing, and nailing of lumber as part of a crew.
  • Perform plastic fusion tasks like socket joints, service tees, and saddle connections on plastic pipes up to 4” diameter.
  • Perform miscellaneous pipe fitting on service connections/alterations, limited to threaded pipe under two inches diameter, with specific length and fitting limitations.
  • Operate equipment such as earthworm, gas/electric hoists, concrete mixers, saws, tractors, and other construction machinery as per Letter of Agreement 24-07.
Qualifications
Minimum
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to pass federally mandated random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Valid Class A California Driver's License Permit (or higher) by hire date.
  • Valid Class C California Driver's License (or higher) by hire date.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and drive safely.
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must wear PPE provided by the company.
Desired
  • At least 2 years of utility or general construction experience.
  • Knowledge of gas standards and specifications.
  • Experience operating hydrovac equipment.
  • Ability to work well with others and follow instructions.
  • Previous experience with PG&E or Hiring Hall is a plus.
  • Good organizational and basic computer skills.
  • Experience operating various construction equipment and vehicles for at least 2 years.
