Department Overview

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. It is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance, construction, restoration, and emergency response. This position is within the In-Line Inspection department, supporting the cleaning and inspection of transmission lines across the entire gas transmission territory.

Position Summary

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, with collective bargaining agreements in place. The Construction Operator- GC is an intermediate role within the Gas Transmission & Distribution General Construction team, offering advancement opportunities for motivated individuals who perform successfully. The work is primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and involves supporting SCADA construction.

Employees will be required to complete hazmat training, respirator fit testing, and obtain heavy equipment certifications due to pipeline inspection and cleaning responsibilities. The role involves significant mobility, working safely around large equipment and above-ground piping, operating pneumatic, hydraulic, and battery-operated tools, and extensive travel to support projects.

The position is a General Construction role, requiring the ability to travel and transfer to a new headquarters upon request across the entire PG&E service territory, with no guarantees on duration away from home. Candidates must be able to drive safely, work extended hours, travel extensively, and wear company-provided PPE. The role may be located in various PG&E regions.

This position is headquartered in Oakland but will support the entire PG&E service territory through travel.

Additional Information

This is a DOT-covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

PG&E provides a starting hourly wage of $53.42, subject to collective bargaining adjustments. The wage reflects local market conditions, skills, certifications, experience, and internal equity.

Responsibilities
  • Perform carpentry work such as simple form work, scaffolds, and basic lumber work when part of a crew.
  • Perform plastic fusion tasks, including socket joints, service tees, and saddle connections on plastic pipes up to 4” diameter when part of a crew.
  • Perform miscellaneous pipe fitting on service connections/alterations, limited to threaded pipe under two inches in diameter, with specific length and fitting limitations.
  • Operate equipment as required, including earthworm, gas/electric hoist, concrete mixers, saws, tractors, air hoists, compressors, and other specified machinery, per Letter of Agreement 24-07.
Qualifications
Minimum
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to pass federally mandated random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Valid Class A California Driver's License Permit (or higher) by start date.
  • Valid Class C California Driver's License (or higher) by start date.
  • Ability to work in all weather extremes and drive safely in various conditions.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to wear company-provided PPE.
Desired
  • At least 2 years of utility or general construction experience.
  • Knowledge of gas standards and specifications.
  • Experience operating hydrovac equipment.
  • Ability to work well with others and follow instructions.
  • Previous experience with PG&E or Hiring Hall is preferred.
  • Good organizational skills and basic computer skills.
  • At least 2 years of experience operating miscellaneous construction equipment and vehicles.
