Job summary

Souder, Miller & Associates is recruiting a Construction Observer II-IV for our Water/Wastewater Tech Sector. The position is based in our Las Cruces, NM office.

Construction Observer I-IV coordinates and observes water and wastewater construction projects under a Project Engineer, with field duties and some office reporting responsibilities. The candidate should identify issues promptly with Contractors and Engineers.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the construction industry.
  • Minimum of 2 years of construction inspection or management experience or the equivalent.
  • Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test and have an acceptable motor vehicle record to drive a company vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Perform construction observation and interact with Contractors, Clients and SMA staff.
  • Inspect work in progress to ensure conformity with plans and specifications.
  • Maintain daily records of construction work and inspections, including quantities and testing.
  • Read and understand construction bid documents, drawings, specs, and contracts.
  • Maintain red-line drawings and assist with RFIs and submittals.
  • Attend project meetings as needed.
  • Be familiar with NM Standard Specifications for Water and Wastewater Construction and Building Construction.

SUMMARY:

Souder, Miller & Associates is recruiting for a Construction Observer II-IV for our Water/Wastewater Tech Sector. The position is located in our Las Cruces, NM office. Construction Observer I-IV is responsible for coordinating and observing the construction of water, sanitary sewer, and other public or private construction projects assisting a project supervisor. Assignments typically include primarily field duties with some office duties, such as daily report writing. Under the supervision of a Project Engineer, ability to perform construction observation and effectively interact with Contractors, Clients and SMA technical and administrative staff. Candidate shall be comfortable identifying potential issues promptly with Contractor and Engineer. Field assignments will extend from several weeks to several months and longer. The preferred Construction Observer should also have the ability to complete Constructability Reviews of design plans.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Able to perform construction observation, effectively interact with Contractors, Clients and SMA technical and administrative staff.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure that it is being constructed in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Must maintain the daily record of construction work and inspection activities, including material quantities, various testing.
  • Must be familiar with testing requirements and methods.
  • Able to read and understand the construction bid documents, including drawings, specifications, and contracts.
  • Maintains a red line set of construction drawings and assist contractor on RFI’s review material submittals.
  • Attend various meetings as needed related to construction projects.
  • Must know the Standard Specifications for Water and Wastewater Construction and Building Construction in New Mexico and their application.
  • Receives inquiries and complaints from residents and coordinates response with Owner and Engineer. Must be able to be a good communicator.
  • Must know how to scale and measure distances. Must obtain measurements and report progress information and place on an Inspector's Daily Report.
  • Become thoroughly familiar with the plans and specifications for the job to be inspected.
  • Check and quantify materials before installation.
  • Point out potential problems to the contractor and project engineer and keep project engineer and supervisor informed of progress of project.
  • Must be able to follow and carry out specific instructions on an independent basis.
  • Must have basic math skills to compute quantities and costs when requested.
  • Must be able to interpret and implement company mandated safety policies. Be aware of and adhere to Contractor’s Safety Plan.
  • Capable of handling the large and complex projects, including multiple trades and/or crews.
  • Capable of overseeing multiple projects with other RPR’s.
  • Responsible for job specific quality system tasks as defined in Resident Project Representative Manual.
  • Assists Project/Senior Engineer with further developing the quality manual, as needed.
  • Ability to complete Constructability Review of design plans.
  • Ability to assist with data collection during planning and design phase.
  • Assists with training new staff in the Construction Observation position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
