Position Overview
Construction Materials and Testing Technician I – Charlotte, NC
This role involves providing high‑level inspection and testing services on construction projects throughout North Carolina, including building, bridge, and roadway construction. The technician performs field observations, sampling, and laboratory testing of construction materials and writes daily field reports.
Responsibilities
- Perform field observations and materials sampling/testing during construction of buildings, bridges, and roadways.
- Test construction materials such as soils, reinforcing steel, concrete, masonry, structural steel, fireproofing, metal decking, roofing, and paving.
- Prepare daily field reports documenting work performed by contractors and indicating compliance/non‑compliance with contract documents.
- Cast field samples of concrete, masonry, grout, etc., for strength verification.
- Provide daily phone updates to the department manager.
- Transport material samples to the laboratory and deliver equipment to site technicians.
Physical Requirements
- Bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds repetitively; lift over 50 pounds using handling equipment.
- Operate heavy equipment such as ultrasonic NDT machines and concrete cylinder presses.
- Maintain safe mobility over construction obstacles, rough ground, and steep surfaces.
- Work outdoors in variable weather at field sites and in laboratories with required safety protection.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1+ years of experience in special inspection or construction materials testing.
- Radiation safety training for operation of a nuclear density gauge.
- ACI Concrete Field‑Testing Technician – Grade 1 certification.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Proficiency with a company laptop or tablet and MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Good work ethic, personal integrity, and ability to monitor contractors and report results verbally and in writing.
- Ability to prepare clear and accurate detailed reports of testing and inspection activities and maintain records.
- Attention to detail, quality, and safety.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Certifications
- NCDOT testing/inspection certifications.
- ICC Special Inspector certifications in any of: reinforced concrete, pre‑stressed concrete, soil, spray‑applied fireproofing, structural masonry, structural welding, structural steel, and bolting.
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) from the American Welding Society.
