Job summary

S&ME in Charlotte, NC is seeking a Construction Materials Project Manager to lead testing, inspections, and technical consulting on diverse projects. You will manage field operations, interpret results, develop reports, and mentor junior staff to promote quality outcomes.

Ideal candidates hold a CM-related degree, 4+ years of PM experience, and active ACI/ICC credentials, with strong writing and communication skills to support client relationships and office growth.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 4 years of experience in project management of construction materials testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt.
  • Active industry certifications: ACI Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician; ICC Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils).
  • Excellent business and technical writing skills; strong verbal and written communication.

Responsibilities

  • Lead field investigations and subsurface exploration activities; coordinate laboratory testing programs and modify project scope as needed.
  • Perform construction monitoring and inspections with accurate site condition documentation and guidance to junior staff.

About The Role

As a Construction Materials Project Manager, you'll lead the delivery of construction materials testing, special inspections, and technical consulting services for a variety of projects. Responsibilities include managing field operations, reviewing and interpreting testing results, developing reports and proposals, and supporting the growth and development of junior team members. Your knowledge of soils, concrete, asphalt, and masonry testing will be key to ensuring quality project execution and strengthening client relationships.

  • Field Investigations & Site Assessment: Lead and support subsurface exploration activities, evaluate potential impacts to data reliability, recommend modifications to project scope when needed, and coordinate laboratory testing programs for collected materials.
  • Construction Monitoring & Inspections: Carry out field inspections and construction monitoring activities, maintain accurate documentation of site conditions, and provide guidance to junior staff on testing and inspection procedures involving soils, concrete, asphalt, and masonry materials.
  • Engineering Analysis & Quality Review: Perform technical evaluations and intermediate-level engineering calculations, assist in training junior personnel on analytical procedures, and review laboratory results to verify consistency, accuracy, and overall data quality.
  • Documentation & Project Support: Develop detailed technical reports and daily field summaries, contribute to proposal preparation through project research and site evaluations, and assist with drafting project scopes under the direction of senior professionals.
  • Client Engagement & Office Growth: Support client communication and relationship-building efforts, participate in networking and professional association activities, assist with business development initiatives, and contribute to marketing and operational growth efforts within the office.
About You
  • You have a Bachelor's degree in construction management or a similar technical field, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • You have a minimum of 4 years of experience in project management of construction materials testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt
  • You have active industry certifications: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician, International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
  • You have excellent business and technical writing skills
  • You have strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • You can effectively lead teams with varying responsibilities and tasks
You Are Willing and Able to

Perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:

  • Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
