Job summary

S&ME is seeking a Construction Materials Engineering Technician to join our Construction Services team in Wilmington, North Carolina. This full-time role involves field testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and related materials on active project sites, with a company vehicle provided for site work.

You will document test results, manage field data, and ensure equipment is maintained and compliant with industry standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of experience in construction testing/inspecting soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials.
• Strong communication skills in English (reading/writing/speaking).
• Ability to read project requirements and record observations accurately.
• Willingness to travel regionally and work outdoors in various conditions.

Responsibilities

• Review project requirements before fieldwork and record observations/test results for soil, concrete, asphalt, etc.
• Utilize field and laboratory information systems to manage data.
• Maintain field and lab equipment to industry standards.
• Perform testing in accordance with IBC standards and project specs.
• Communicate progress and issues with management, contractors, and clients.

About The Role:

As a seasoned Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you'll be equipped with a company vehicle to conduct field testing and observations of construction materials at various project sites. At S&ME, we are committed to ensuring everything is "built right," and we take that responsibility very seriously. • Project and Document Review: Understand project requirements before fieldwork; accurately record observations and test results related to construction materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and other pertinent materials.
• Metafield Utilization: Efficiently manage data using field and laboratory information systems.
• Equipment Maintenance: Ensure field and lab tools are accurate and meet industry standards.
• Inspection Monitoring: Follow International Building Code (IBC) standards for testing and inspecting construction materials.
• Stakeholder Communication: Interact with management, contractors, and clients to report project progress and resolve any issues.

Field Work, Schedule & Travel

This position is primarily based outdoors on active construction sites. Work schedules may vary based on project needs and weather conditions and can include early mornings, evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and overtime opportunities paid at time-and-a-half. Some travel may be required to support projects across the region.

Using company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), you should be comfortable:

• Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Traveling to project sites as needed
• Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for extended periods, potentially up to 12 hours per day
• Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50 pounds of equipment and materials
• Safely maneuvering field equipment around active construction sites

About You:

• You have a High School diploma/GED
• You have a minimum of 3 years of experience in construction testing/inspecting soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
• You have active industry certifications:
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
  • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
• You have effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
• You have good math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
• You understand a fluctuating schedule and have interest in occasional travel
• You have a valid U.S. driver's license with an acceptable driving record
• You can safely operate a company-assigned vehicle, including trucks and SUVs
• You are willing to complete a background check, driving record check, and drug screen upon offer of employment
