Job summary

Join S&M as a Construction Materials Engineering Technician at the Charleston area office. You will perform field and laboratory testing on concrete, soils, asphalt, and aggregates, collect and prepare samples, and interpret results for detailed reports.

The role offers hands-on training, mentorship, and opportunities for leadership as you gain experience. We welcome candidates with basic lab skills and a willingness to work outdoors in varying weather, often with early mornings, some Saturdays,

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree preferred for advanced levels
• Technician levels range from I to IV with increasing experience or education requirements
• ACI/ICC certifications are preferred for advancement and field/ lab work

Construction Materials Engineering Technicians - Hiring Event

Do you like to work outside? Do you have an interest in construction? Previous experience working in construction is preferred but not required.

About The Role:

As a full-time Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you'll play a vital role in ensuring construction projects, from local eateries to major sports venues, are built with quality and safety at the forefront. Whether you're new to the field or bring years of expertise, you'll receive hands-on training, mentorship, and opportunities to advance. Seasoned professionals can take on leadership roles, guiding projects and mentoring colleagues.

• Field & Lab Testing: Performing field and laboratory testing on construction materials like concrete, asphalt, soil, and aggregates.
• Sample Collection & Prep: Collecting and preparing samples for analysis.
• Data Interpretation & Reporting: Interpreting test results and preparing detailed reports.
• Team Collaboration & Compliance: Working closely with engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure all work meets specifications and safety guidelines.

Experience shifting work hours based on project demands and weather, including early mornings, some Saturdays, and overtime (paid at time and a half). Occasional travel to support other offices is covered with per diem and lodging.

About You:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in a related field preferred for advanced levels
  • Associate Technician/Technician I: 0-2 years relevant experience
  • Technician II: 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an associate degree
  • Technician III: 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an associate degree
  • Technician IV: 5+ years of relevant experience; prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus
• Active Industry certifications such as: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician, and/or International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector
• ICC Reinforced Concrete and ICC Masonry are strongly preferred
• Strong English communication skills (verbal and written)
• Basic math proficiency, including an understanding of measurements and units of weight
• The understanding of a fluctuating schedule and interest in occasional travel

Pay begins at $20/hr with no direct experience.

Competitive pay for industry experience and certifications (ACI, ICC, etc.).

You Are Willing and Able to:

Perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:

• Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially long periods
• Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
• Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
