Job summary

Gresham Smith in Birmingham, AL is seeking a Construction Manager to lead complex commercial and municipal projects. You will manage contract administration, budgets, schedules, QA, scope, and RFIs, coordinating with architects, engineers and contractors.

This role emphasizes risk management, site safety, team leadership, and clear client communications. You will supervise field staff, participate in hiring, and drive project documentation and commissioning.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Construction Management or related field with relevant experience.
• 10–15 years of construction management experience on commercial and municipal projects.
• Licenses, registrations, or certifications are a plus; OSHA or client standards training post-hire may be required.

Responsibilities

• Manage contract administration: budget, risk, change orders, QA, scope, schedule, payments, submittals, RFIs.
• Inform stakeholders on progress and budgets throughout the project lifecycle.
• Perform risk mitigation and ensure site safety plans.
• Lead project meetings and document outcomes.
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, and contractors.
• Respond to delays, emergencies, and other issues.
• Review contractor schedules and provide constructive feedback.
• Coordinate project documentation in the administration database.
• Review submittals and RFIs with SMEs when needed.
• Understand site logistics, codes, geotechnical studies, and licensing.

About You

• An associate degree in Construction Management or a related field with relevant experience
• 10 to 15 years of experience in construction management; experience in construction and inspection on a wide variety of commercial and municipal projects preferred
• Licenses, registrations, or certifications are a plus; willingness to participate in certification and training courses post-hire as required by OSHA or client-specific standards

About the Role

As a Construction Manager, you will:

• Manage contract administration including budget, risk management, change processes (change orders and contract modifications), quality assurance, scope, schedule monitoring, payment requisitions, submittal and RFI processes, and prepare project closeout documents
• Keep all stakeholders informed throughout the entire project lifecycle, reporting work progress and budget matters to clients
• Perform risk mitigation activities and ensure adherence to site safety plans
• Facilitate and lead project meetings, documenting outcomes for the project team
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, and contracted personnel
• Respond proactively to work delays, emergencies, and other issues
• Review contractors' schedules and provide constructive feedback
• Coordinate, implement, and manage project documentation and procedures in the project administration database
• Review and respond to minor submittals and RFIs, involving subject matter experts when necessary
• Understand project site logistics, specifications, geotechnical reports, drawings, environmental studies, erosion and sedimentation control plans, building codes, and licensing requirements
• Manage the construction field office, assign tasks to direct reports, including administration operations and resident project representatives
• Participate in hiring team members, including interviewing, conducting annual performance reviews, and administering discipline
• Oversee site representatives monitoring quality and conduct quality assurance inspections
• Coordinate commissioning requirements
