Job summary

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company is seeking an undergraduate intern to gain hands-on experience across the construction lifecycle. You will support project teams in both office and field settings, with assignments ranging from quantity take-off to RFIs, submittals, and field record maintenance.

Open to students pursuing a BS in engineering, construction management, or related disciplines. Relocation to remote sites may be required; housing may be provided in certain situations.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate student pursuing a BS in an engineering discipline, engineering technology or construction management.
• Interest in hands-on construction experience from bidding to completion.
• Willingness to relocate to remote sites if required.

Responsibilities

• Learn engineering/technical aspects of projects in field and office.
• Assist with quantities, layout, surveys, and shop drawings.
• Review/submission of submittals and RFIs; maintain logs.
• Coordinate with owner, architect, and subcontractors.
• Assist during bid process and reviewing construction documents.
• Maintain field records and assist with cost/scheduling.

This position is for the Washington, DC Metro Area which includes :

• College Park, MD office
• Arlington, VA office
• Herndon, VA office

What It Takes

Open to undergraduate students interested in gaining hands‑on practical experience in the construction field. Qualified applicants will assist project teams in managing construction projects/ including all phases from bidding to final completion.

• Assignments include office and job site; relocation to a remote sites may be required.
• Transportation is required.
• Work periods are 10-12 weeks; 40 hours/week.
• Housing may be provided in certain situations.

Intern Job Description

Reporting Relationship: Depending on the work assignment, interns will report to a project manager, superintendent, project engineer or field engineer. You may be assigned to the office, jobsite or mix of both.

Tasks Assigned: You will be learning the engineering and technical aspects of the project both in the field and in the office. Your experience will include some or all the following:

• Quantity take‑off
• Layout
• Preconstruction/as‑built surveys
• Shop drawing review/approval & maintenance of log
• Submittal review/approval & maintenance of log
• Request for information (RFI) review/submission & maintenance of log
• Responding to subcontractor RFIs
• Interfacing with subcontractors & suppliers
• Attending weekly progress meetings
• Assisting with coordinating the work between the owner, architect & subcontractors
• Assisting during the bid process
• Assist with reviewing construction documents & specifications
• Assisting with reviewing all document revisions & clarifications
• Assisting with maintaining field record

• Assisting with estimates/budgets/value engineering/constructability surveys Assist with writing contracts & purchase orders
• Assisting with preparing billings to owner & submitting change orders
• Assisting with approval of invoices
• Assisting with ordering & expediting materials
• Assisting with scheduling & updates
• Assisting with quality control & safety
• Assisting with settling contracts
• Assisting with permit process
• Assisting with performing costing, scheduling, estimating & project management
• Punchlist & project closeout

Education

Candidates should be in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline, engineering technology or construction management, construction technology.

Technical Capabilities

You should be familiar with the following software: Primavera, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, etc.

The Company's pay ranges are dependent on a number of factors including but not limited to role, previous internships with the Company, education experience, and location. The pay range listed is subject to change at any time, in the Company's discretion, and does not alter in any way the at‑will nature of the employment relationship. The foregoing information reflects pay range only and does not include other forms of compensation to which employees may be entitled.

This salary range is for Maryland/DC only.
