Job summary

Whiting-Turner Contracting Company is seeking undergraduate interns for hands-on experience in the construction field across the Washington, DC Metro Area, including College Park, MD, and Herndon, VA offices.

You will support project teams through all phases from bidding to completion, with assignments in office and on-site environments; relocation to remote sites may be required, and transportation is necessary. Housing may be provided in certain situations.

Responsibilities

• Assist with quantity take-off, layout, and shop drawing review/logs maintenance.

• Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers; attend weekly progress meetings.
• Assist with coordinating work between owner, architect, and subcontractors.
• Assist during the bid process and review of construction documents.

What It Takes

Open to undergraduate students interested in gaining hands-on practical experience in the construction field. Qualified applicants will assist project teams in managing construction projects/ including all phases from bidding to final completion.

• Assignments include office and job site; relocation to a remote sites may be required.
• Transportation is required.
• Work periods are 10-12 weeks; 40 hours/week.
• Housing may be provided in certain situations.

Intern Job Description

Reporting Relationship: Depending on the work assignment, interns will report to a project manager, superintendent, project engineer or field engineer. You may be assigned to the office, jobsite or mix of both.

Tasks Assigned: You will be learning the engineering and technical aspects of the project both in the field and in the office. Your experience will include some or all the following:

• Quantity take-off
• Layout
• Shop drawing review/approval & maintenance of log
• Submittal review/approval & maintenance of log
• Request for information (RFI) review/submission & maintenance of log
• Responding to subcontractor RFIs
• Interfacing with subcontractors & suppliers
• Attending weekly progress meetings
• Assisting with coordinating the work between the owner, architect & subcontractors
• Assisting during the bid process
• Assist with reviewing construction documents & specifications
• Assisting with reviewing all document revisions & clarifications
• Assisting with maintaining field record
• Assisting with estimates/budgets/value engineering/constructability surveys Assist with writing contracts & purchase orders
• Assisting with preparing billings to owner & submitting change orders
• Assisting with approval of invoices
• Assisting with ordering & expediting materials
• Assisting with scheduling & updates
• Assisting with quality control & safety
• Assisting with settling contracts
• Assisting with permit process
• Assisting with performing costing, scheduling, estimating & project management
• Cooperating & working with field project management
• And any other duties that may be assigned

Education

Candidates should be in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline, engineering technology or construction management, construction technology.

Technical Capabilities

You should be familiar with the following software: Primavera, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, etc.

The Company's pay ranges are dependent on a number of factors including but not limited to role, previous internships with the Company, education experience, and location.
