CTL Engineering is hiring Inspectors | Construction Services for ODOT (transportation) projects!

CTL Engineering (www.ctleng.com) is an award-winning, full-service consulting engineering firm with 15 locations across OH, IN, WV, KY, NC, SC, and VA, with a rich history spanning over 98 years. We provide civil/site design, land surveying, environmental, geotechnical, construction administration & inspection, accident reconstruction, roofing/building envelope, A/V system design, troubleshooting & installation, transportation design (bridge/roadway), and specialized testing services to the construction industry.

We are looking for Inspectors | Construction Services who will play a key role in construction administration, inspection, and testing services for state (ODOT), county, and local clients. You’ll be involved in testing and inspecting a wide variety of construction projects, primarily in the roadway/bridge sector, but also including water/wastewater, aviation, commercial, and municipal utility/infrastructure sectors. You’ll leverage your expertise in construction inspection and creative problem-solving skills while collaborating closely with institutions and municipal agencies.

This position will utilize your experience while allowing you to learn new skills, assisting clients through our cross-functional team dynamic and company culture.

Highlights:

  • This role involves primarily fieldwork with some office work.
  • You will work independently on broad projects under the guidance of a Department Manager.
  • Projects are mainly located in northern Ohio, with frequent travel expected within this region.
  • A stipend for personal vehicle use or a company take-home vehicle will be provided, depending on the assignment.
  • Experience with ODOT projects is a strong plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and enforce quality standards and specifications.
  • Read project drawings, specifications, blueprints, and work on various construction projects.
  • Perform construction administration and inspection services for roadway, bridge, municipal utility, and infrastructure projects.
  • Inspect construction projects to ensure contractor compliance with specifications, plans, and proposals.
  • Verify plan quantities and calculations are within bid plans.
  • Prepare and maintain project records and reports promptly.
  • Notify contractors or project engineers about non-conforming work or project status updates.
  • Possibly conduct hazardous material surveys and asbestos abatement monitoring during relevant projects.
  • Conduct quality control testing at project sites, including testing of concrete, soils, masonry, asphalt, aggregate, and steel reinforcement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Engineer or Project Manager.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of engineering, construction, testing, and inspection principles.
  • Experience with materials and lab testing.
  • Experience with quality control testing and compliance standards.
  • Familiarity with standard testing and observation methods.
  • Understanding of construction or engineering services.
  • Experience in quality control initiatives and performance testing.
  • Proficiency in lab reporting, report writing, and record keeping.
  • Ability to manage projects with minimal supervision.
  • Monitoring construction and demolition environments effectively.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to provide independent status updates.
  • Focus on quality and client satisfaction.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of the ODOT Certified Technician program is a strong plus, or a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
  • Technical school or community college graduate with an Associate Degree and 2+ years of related experience.
  • At least 2 years of related experience.
  • Familiarity with highway construction specifications and field experience.
  • Experience working for a testing company.
  • Experience with field and laboratory testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, masonry, structural steel, and fireproofing.
  • Certifications such as ACI Grade I, DOT Asphalt Tech, NICET Level II Soils, ICC Special Inspections, or CWI/NDT inspectors are preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record are required.
