Job summary

Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP is seeking Construction Inspector Trainees to join our team as we staff transportation projects for VDOT and localities. You will work with seasoned inspectors and managers on field inspections, reporting, and material testing.

We value practical problem solving, attention to safety, and ability to read plans. The role requires 0–2 years experience, valid driver's license, and good communication. Training will cover certifications and field procedures.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or State Equivalency Certificate.
• Bachelor's Degree or advanced certificate desirable.
• Must have good communication skills.
• Must be able to read/interpret plans and specifications.
• Writing and drawing skills are necessary to complete inspection reports.
• Basic computer skills (Word & Excel) are desirable.

Responsibilities

• Construction management and field inspection to ensure conformance with contract documents.
• Performing field inspection of Contractor's operations and prepare reports on work accomplished.
• Perform materials testing and maintain testing logs.
• Review Contractor pay estimates for accuracy.
• Review Contractor schedules and as-built drawings as needed.
• Communicate with Engineer and project team about field conditions and changes.

We are looking for Construction Inspector Trainees to join our growing team... We are constantly winning new contracts and are looking for new inspectors to staff these projects.

The Inspector Trainee will work alongside experienced Construction Inspectors and Construction Managers performing daily construction management and inspection services for various types of VDOT and locality transportation projects.

Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities may include:

• Construction management
• Performing field inspection of Contractor's operations to see that they comply with contract documents
• Preparing daily and weekly reports on work accomplished by Contractor
• Performing materials testing and maintaining testing logs
• Reviewing periodic pay estimates for accuracy with Contractor
• Preparing sketches and assembling data for Engineer's use in making changes to the project
• Keeping diaries and making reports on work accomplished and/or noted deficiencies
• Performing sophisticated, complicated mathematical calculations
• Reviewing Contractor schedules including initial CPM and monthly updates
• Communicating effectively with the Engineer, Owner and Owner's operational and field staff on a regular basis, keeping them apprised of field conditions and maintaining active communications and excellent rapport with the Owner and the entire project team throughout the construction process

Requirements:

• 0-2 years of specific field construction inspection experience in the specified areas listed below.
• Inspection Skills
  • Applicants must have demonstrated inspection and management experience with roadway and bridge construction, utility construction, and related pavement rehabilitation projects requiring monitoring a contractor's work for conformance to the design plans, specifications and general permit requirements
  • Experience in coordinating inspection duties with multiple simultaneously operating crews
  • Experience tracking daily quantities, completing daily inspection reports, performing monthly estimates and as-built drawings.
• Additional Training or Certifications - VDOT materials certifications including Asphalt, Concrete, Soils and Aggregate and Pavement Marking. ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification desired. Erosion & Sediment control certification (i.e., DCR Inspector's Certification) and Intermediate Work Zone Safety/ATSSA TCS
• Applicant must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record
• High School Diploma or State Equivalency Certificate. Bachelor's Degree or other advanced certificate desirable
• Must have good communication skills
• Must be able to read/interpret plans and specifications

Physical Requirements (Essential Functions):

This position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks in the field as part of the essential job functions. Duties may include:

• Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfaces
• Moving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles
• Performing physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing
• Remaining in a stationary position—either standing or sitting for extended periods of time
• Repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
• Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs distances up to100 yards.
• Driving to and from project sites which may involve distances of up to or exceeding 120 miles round trip.
• Must be able to function safely in an environment with potential risks, including, but not limited to those described in this document.
• Work from heights exceeding 6 feet
• Must be able to wear a properly fitted safety harness and be knowledgeable of the correct use and of regular inspection of the harness and components
• Must be willing to work nights and overtime, when required by the project assignment

The work environment may include exposure to a range of environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures, precipitation, and other outdoor elements. Work may also be performed in noisy conditions or confined/enclosed spaces.
