Job description

RK&K's Construction Engineering Inspection and Construction Management Division is hiring entry to mid-level Construction Inspectors in and around the Lexington, Staunton, and Winchester, VA areas. This role primarily involves work in VDOT's Staunton District, adjacent Districts, and localities including Staunton, Covington, Lexington, Winchester, Luray, and Harrisonburg. As a Construction Inspector with RK&K, you will apply your knowledge of construction, safety, quality, and materials to provide critical inspection services on heavy civil construction sites, including highway, bridge, and design-build projects. Essential Functions

1. Provide construction management support, including inspection and monitoring of roadway and structure construction to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety regulations.
2. Engage in solving complex problems to provide technical evaluation and sound solutions.
3. Monitor and document contractor activities; communicate and document non-compliant work elements.
4. Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment.
5. Review placement of materials and conduct materials testing as required.
6. Communicate effectively across platforms with project management, clients, stakeholders, and contractors.
7. Interface with clients, state and federal agencies, and other engineering disciplines on construction projects.
8. Perform field measurements and track daily quantities of work items installed.
9. Maintain comprehensive project records and reporting as required.

Required Skills and Experience

1. Three (3) years of relevant experience in materials, standards, and specifications related to state highway projects and facilities.
2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
3. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including algebra and geometry.
4. Proficient in computer software including Microsoft Office and other construction documentation tools.
5. Capable of working independently on small construction projects.
6. Ability to pass Criminal History Background Check (CHBC).
7. Acceptable driving record.
8. High School Diploma or GED.

Certifications Required

1. VDOT Required Material Certifications (or ability to obtain within 6 months):

• VDOT Soil and Aggregate Compaction - NICET LEVEL II
• VDOT Asphalt Field Level I & II
• ACI Concrete Field Level I, or WACEL Concrete I, or NICET LEVEL II
• VDOT Pavement Marking
• VDOT Slurry Surfacing
• VDOT Surface Treatment
• VDOT Flagger Certification
• VDOT GRIT (Guardrail Certification)
• VA DEQ - Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection
• VA DEQ - Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification
• Nuclear Gauge Safety Training
• ATTSA Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control
• 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training - OSHA

Preferred Skills and Experience

1. Construction inspection experience including roadway, asphalt, concrete, pavement markings, structure, and bridge construction methods.
2. Experience with VDOT and other local public agencies preferred.
3. Experience with construction document management software such as PlanGrid, AWP, and SharePoint.
4. Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field.
