Job summary

MKEC seeks a Part-Time Construction Inspector to join our Wichita team, performing daily inspections on municipal and civil projects across roadways, utilities, and earthwork, ensuring compliance with plans, specs and codes.

The role follows a project-by-project schedule with variable hours; busy periods may reach 30–40+ hours per week over 5–6 days, followed by gaps between projects.

Qualifications

• Requires High School Diploma or GED; associate degree preferred.
• 2–5 years civil construction inspection or trades experience.
• Plan sheets, drawings and specs reading is essential.
• Clear written and verbal communication; coordinate with field crews and clients.
• Proficient with mobile tablets, PDF tools, and digital daily reporting apps.
• Part-time hours based on active contractor schedules and weather windows.
• Outdoor work in all weather, uneven terrain, long periods of standing, lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily inspections on municipal and civil projects (roadways, utilities, earthwork) to verify compliance with plans, specs, and codes.
• Prepare detailed daily inspection logs (IDRs) with photos, pay quantities, weather, crew sizes and progress.
• Communicate daily with contractors, engineers, and clients.
• Observe or perform basic field sampling/testing (concrete slump/air, soil density) and verify proper installation of rebar, aggregate, and bedding.
• Monitor job sites for adherence to traffic control plans (MUTCD) and SWPPP/erosion control rules.
• Measure installed field quantities for contractor pay estimates and maintain as-built records.

We’re looking for a Part-Time Construction Inspector to join our team at our Wichita location. This individual will assist with a variety of projects from any of our civil engineering service areas: Land Development, Public Works, Transportation, and Industrial/Energy.

This position operates on a project-by-project schedule with variable hours throughout the year rather than a steady weekly schedule. During active construction periods, work will probably be full-time (30–40+ hours per week over 5–6 days), followed by multi-week or multi-month gaps between projects with minimal to no hours.

Responsibilities:

• Perform daily inspections on municipal and civil projects (roadways, utilities, earthwork) to verify compliance with plans, specs, and codes.
• Prepare detailed daily inspection logs (IDRs), including photos, pay quantities, weather conditions, contractor crew sizes, and site progress.
• Communicate daily with contractors, engineers, and clients.
• Perform or observe basic field sampling/testing (concrete slump/air, soil density) and verify proper installation of rebar, aggregate, and bedding.
• Monitor job sites for adherence to traffic control plans (MUTCD), and SWPPP/erosion control rules.

Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED required; Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Tech or Construction Management preferred.
• 2–5 years of civil construction inspection or hands-on trades experience (roadways, utilities, earthwork).
• Strong ability to read and interpret engineering plan sheets, detail drawings, and project specs.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable coordinating with field crews and clients.
• Proficient with mobile tablets, PDF tools, and digital daily reporting apps.
• Ability to work part-time hours based on active contractor schedules and weather windows.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather, walk on uneven terrain, stand for long periods, and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

• ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I
• OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Certification
• State DOT or SWPPP Inspector Certification
