Job summary

The City of Fort Worth’s Transportation & Public Works Department, Capital Delivery Division, seeks a Construction Inspector II to review and interpret construction plans and oversee projects involving utilities, storm drainage, concrete and asphalt to ensure compliance with plans, specs, contracts, and regulatory requirements. This includes TMUTCD and TCEQ compliance.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Two (2) years of construction inspection experience involving public works, storm drainage systems, and structures.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, within one (1) year of employment, a Class C Water Distribution certification from the State of Texas.
  • Must pass the City of Fort Worth Human Performance Evaluation (HPE) and a Drug Screen.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • At least three (3) years’ experience with utility, storm drainage, concrete/asphalt.
  • Availability to work overtime and respond to call-backs on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects work quality and materials used in a variety of public works projects during various stages of construction to ensure compliance with construction standards and codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Performs preliminary and final inspections and recommends acceptance of developments.
  • Observes work during progress and upon completion.
  • Coordinates change orders and advise contractors of changes in plans and specifications.
  • Ensures that safety procedures are followed.
  • Inspects various public works structures including utilities, streets, sidewalks, gutters, structural concrete, storm systems and various other facilities.
  • Acts as liaison between contractors and the general public with respect to various construction projects.
  • A strong interpersonal, management, and excellent communications skills with the unique ability to transfer these concepts clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing with the development community and internal City staff.
  • Responsible for driving a City vehicle.

A Construction Inspector II position is available with the City of Fort Worth’s Transportation & Public Works Department, Capital Delivery Division. The selected candidate will be responsible for reviewing and interpreting construction plans and overseeing infrastructure projects involving utilities, storm drainage, concrete, and asphalt paving to ensure full compliance with plans, specifications, contracts, and all applicable regulatory requirements. This includes ensuring that workmanship and materials meet all required standards and verifying compliance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations, the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD), and all work zone safety requirements.

The role also involves establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with contractors, utility providers, the general public, and fellow employees. The ideal candidate is responsible, dependable, highly detail‑oriented, and committed to working collaboratively as part of a team.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Two (2) years of construction inspection experience involving the construction and maintenance of public works, storm drainage systems, and structures
  • Valid driver’s license

Working Conditions and Physical Demands
