Job summary
Texas Department of Transportation is seeking Construction Inspectors I, II, and III to inspect roadway projects and ensure compliance with plans and standards. You will coordinate with contractors, review material testing, and document inspections throughout diverse counties.
The role requires a valid driver’s license, (state vehicle) operation, and ability to work in varying conditions; progression through I-III reflects increasing responsibility and independence.

Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
- Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
- Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
- Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
- Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
- Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades.
- Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
- Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.
- Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
- Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Ensures adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensures material tests are performed and materials meet required standards.
- Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel.

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

TxDOT's San Angelo District is looking for a Construction Inspector I, II, or III to inspect roadway projects. This position is located at the Junction Area Office which covers Concho, Menard, Kimble, Crockett, Schleicher, Sutton, Edwards, and Real counties. The duties will include performing daily inspections on roadway construction projects of various sizes, coordinating and communicating with contractors, coordinating with the District Lab for testing of materials, and documenting the work performed by contractors.
