Job summary
TxDOT is seeking a Construction Inspector I or II to join our Houston Traffic Systems team. The role inspects roadway and airport-related constructions, reviews plans and specs, coordinates with contractors, and supports problem resolution to ensure quality and safety on projects.
You will work under a licensed engineer, prepare estimates, and document progress. Houston district projects include signals, lighting, ITS, and roadways.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- No experience required for Construction Inspector I; related education or training may substitute for experience.
- Valid driver’s license; willing to drive a state vehicle.

- Advise supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assist in coordinating inspections.
- Attend pre-construction meetings and answer questions from contractors and other attendees.
- Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.
- Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Prepares monthly and final estimates.
- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
- Coordinate inspection schedules, traffic control needs, and access issues with district personnel.

Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

- Serves as a lead worker or project leader.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education:
- High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
- No experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Competencies:
- Considerable knowledge of:
- Methods for reviewing plans and specifications for compliance with requirements
- Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
- Basic traffic management and control procedures
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
- Some knowledge of:
- Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps
- Some skill in:
- Scheduling work assignments
- Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
- Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Education:
- High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
- 1 year construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent) . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

- Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
- Methods for reviewing plans and specifications for compliance with requirements
- Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
- Proficient skill in:
- Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps
- Some skill in:
- Overseeing and coordinating projects and program activities
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Standing - prolonged periods of time
- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
