Job summary

The City of Bakersfield is seeking Construction Inspectors I and II to perform detailed inspections of Public Works construction projects, interpret plans and specifications to ensure contract compliance, and prepare change orders and cost estimates.

Under general supervision, inspect sidewalks, streets, drainage facilities, and related infrastructure; maintain records; coordinate with utility companies, contractors, and engineers to resolve issues and ensure quality workmanship.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is required.
• Two years of experience in sub-professional engineering work including construction inspection or related area.
• Two years of college including engineering-related courses.
• One year experience as Engineering Technician or Engineering Aide II.
• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Inspects Public Works construction and street maintenance projects for contract compliance.
• Interprets plans and specs; prepares change orders and cost estimates.
• Maintains records of daily operations including man-hours and materials on site.
• Communicates with utility representatives, contractors, engineers and other agencies.
• Conducts on-site safety and accident investigations.

Education

High school diploma or GED

Two years of sub-professional engineering experience (construction inspection, design drafting, engineering calculations, surveying, soils lab testing, or related)

Two years of college including engineering-related courses

One year experience as Engineering Technician or Engineering Aide II

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR I: $31.70 - $38.62 / Hour

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR II: $36.62 - $44.51 / Hour

THE POSITION:

Under general supervision, performs detailed inspection of Public Works construction projects; interprets plans and specifications to endure contract compliance; prepares and recommends change orders and cost estimates.

The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting. Essential Duties: Inspects a variety of Public Works construction and street maintenance projects, such as, sidewalks, structures, driveways, sewer mains, and lateral installations, curbs and gutters, retaining walls, earthwork, street excavation and patchwork, and drainage facilities to determine compliance with contract standards and specifications, State laws, and local ordinances; may inspect major architectural and engineering projects; interprets construction plans and specifications; prepares and makes recommendations on change orders; prepares cost estimates; maintains necessary records of daily operations including man-hours, equipment hours, and materials on site; meets and confers with representative of utility companies, contractors, engineers and other public agencies regarding construction plans and specifications; answers citizen complaints and requests for information; makes on-site safety and accident investigations, and posts locations scheduled for repair; may perform duties on a survey party for construction survey projects.

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR I:

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent: AND
• Two (2) years of experience in sub-professional engineering work including construction inspection, design drafting, design, engineering calculations, surveying, soils lab testing, or related area; OR
• Two (2) years of college including engineering-related courses AND
• One (1) year experience as an Engineering Technician or an Engineering Aide II
• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR II:

• In addition to the above, must have an additional two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to the City’s Construction Inspector I class

ORAL APPRAISAL INTERVIEW (Weighted 100%): Week of September 21, 2026 (Tentative)

An appraisal will be made of the applicant's experience, education, training, certification, knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal qualifications for the position. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.
