Position Information

TxDOT's Houston District is seeking a Construction Inspector I for our Fort Bend/Waller Area Office located in Rosenberg, Texas. This position will be responsible for monitoring construction activities to ensure compliance with contract plans and specifications. You will oversee a range of projects, from small preventative maintenance to major highway reconstruction. Salary Range

Minimum: $45,521.00

Maximum: $71,055.00

Job Responsibilities

Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant on work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the sole inspector or assist on large projects; reports to a licensed professional engineer; interacts with contractors; may perform materials testing and manufacturing inspections. Follows standard practices with minimal supervision.

  • Calculates contractor payments for completed work.
  • Consults with project engineers, representatives, and contractors on progress and issues.
  • Ensures construction complies with plans and specifications.
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
  • Inspects ongoing work and maintains records.
  • Recommends payments, change orders, and reviews proposals.
  • Assists in data collection, inspections, and plan development activities.
  • Documents progress and issues throughout projects.
  • Performs additional assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: None required; can be satisfied by full or part-time work. College education or technical training may substitute experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license; ability to drive a state vehicle.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Construction policies, safety standards, and industry codes.
  • Ability to read plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps.
  • Performs calculations related to materials, labor, and estimates.
  • Analyzes and organizes technical data.
  • Maintains safety and effective working relationships.
  • Proficient with computers and relevant applications.
  • Uses logic and reasoning for problem-solving and decision-making.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to environmental conditions, noise, hazards, and atmospheric factors.
  • Requires wearing protective gear.
  • Medium physical work: lifting up to 50 lbs., frequent lifting of 25 lbs.
  • Walking, standing, crouching, and visual acuity for data, computer screens, and operating vehicles.
  • Pre-employment physical and drug testing required.
