Job summary

Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber is seeking a Construction Inspector to support Michigan DOT projects in Grand Rapids. The role focuses on field inspection, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with engineers and technicians.

You will prepare reports, verify specifications, and assist with information requests while maintaining flexible hours and travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Concrete Technology, or equivalent experience.
• 2–5+ years of inspection experience on DOT or municipal projects.
• Knowledge of DOT documentation requirements and familiarity with AASHTOWare, Appia, or other digital inspection platforms is a plus.
• Valid driver's license with ability to travel and work flexible hours, including weekends.

Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed Daily Work Reports (DWRs) documenting work status, pay item postings, materials, and jobsite conditions.
• Complete calculations, sketches, and forms, including concrete placement reports, permits, removal item records, wage interviews, mobility reports, and drilled shaft inspection reports.
• Verify construction compliance with contract requirements and communicate non-compliance issues to senior staff.
• Assist with Requests for Information and serve as liaison between contractors and senior technicians/engineers.
• Collaborate with project teams, including engineers, technicians, survey staff, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Work closely with senior technicians and engineers to ensure proper execution of project designs.

Construction Inspector - Michigan DOT

Employment Type: Full-Time

Working with our Civil Field team, you willinspect a variety of different projects for compliance with regulations, project plans, and client specifications.

What You'll Do

What We're Looking For

• Valid driver's license with good driving record; ability to travel and work flexible hours, including weekends.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work independently.
• Experience with Microsoft Office; familiarity with Bluebeam or PlanGrid is a plus.
• Experience with survey equipment including GPS or Arrow Systems is a plus.
