Job summary

MoDOT seeks qualified construction inspectors to ensure contract conformance across diverse sites in the Kansas City District. Responsibilities include inspecting paving, bridges, utility adjustments, and traffic controls, with varying levels (entry to senior) based on experience.

Successful candidates will hold an ABET-accredited engineering degree, may need nuclear gauge certification, and must complete work simulations and medical exams. Salary ranges from entry to senior levels with benefits.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Coordinates and performs construction inspections verifying that contractors' activities are in compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
• Performs duties of inspector in charge of routine items such as asphaltic or portland cement concrete plants, paving, and related inspections.
• Performs measurements, computations, or other work in preparing final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
• Maintains required construction documentation, records and files; prepares progress and other reports, keeps supervisor informed.

What you’ll do:

• Coordinates and performs construction inspections verifying that contractors' activities are in compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
• Performs duties of inspector in charge of routine construction items, such as asphaltic or portland cement concrete plants, asphaltic or concrete paving, including grading and base, small bridges, concrete box and pipe culverts; inspects general or special items, such as utility adjustments, signing, traffic signals and lighting.
• Performs measurements, computations, or other work in preparing final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
• Maintains required construction documentation, records and files; prepares progress and other reports, keeps supervisor fully informed as to activities or unusual conditions on the job.
• Provides field checks for contractor surveying operations; serves as party chief on routine layout and staking; serves as instrument operator on staking of large bridges, other critical structures, or complex interchanges.

Successful candidates with the above qualifications will be considered for one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities.

• Entry salary- $67,307.04
• Intermediate salary- $72,691.68
• Senior salary- $78,506.88

• Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
• A postsecondary degree is the best measure to ensure candidates possess required engineering knowledge, including in applied physics and mathematics, drafting, engineering processes and procedures, project management, industry ethical standards, and analyzing and modeling data.

Minimum Qualifications - Non-ABET

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field. OR
• 8 years of experience in construction inspecting or related field.
• Certification to operate nuclear gauges may be required.
• Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.

Successful candidates with the above qualifications will be considered for one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities.

• Entry salary- $57,762.48
• Intermediate salary- $62,383.68
• Senior salary- $68,803.68

Note for internal applicants: Successful candidates already at rates above the posted salary will be evaluated on an individual basis to determine final salary outcome.
