Job summary

HDR is seeking a qualified Construction Inspector to perform inspection for Roadway, Utilities, Civil and Structures on the I-5 Improvement Project in Irvine, CA. The role requires Caltrans experience and strict compliance with local, Caltrans, and federal regulations.

You will inspect paving, structures, and subgrade, review plans, prepare diaries and reports, coordinate QA testing, and support closeout documentation.

Qualifications

Job description

HDR is seeking a qualified and experienced Construction Inspector to perform inspection for Roadway, Utilities, Civil and Structures construction for the Interstate 5 (I-5) Improvement Project between Yale Avenue and State Route 55 (SR-55). The project is funded through the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and is administered by Caltrans. Therefore, the Construction Inspector must have Caltrans experience and be knowledgeable of, and compliant with, all applicable local, Caltrans, and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

• Perform and assist in performing the duties of construction inspection and engineering, including HMA, JPCP, CRCP paving and subgrade inspection; structures inspection for large‑diameter piles, driven piles, columns, falsework, temporary shoring, bridge components, retaining walls, and related items.
• Review project plans and specifications for possible errors and deficiencies, report findings, and recommend engineering solutions to the RE. Assist with implementation and processing of change orders in accordance with Caltrans specifications.
• Adhere to all safety and health codes and enforce applicable contract provisions for the protection of the public and project personnel.
• Prepare daily diaries, calculations, records, reports, and correspondence in accordance with the Caltrans construction manual.
• Assist in preparing As‑Built plans and documenting field conditions for claims reports.
• Perform Storm Water Pollution Prevention (SWPP) duties as required.
• Develop 4‑scale drawings, grade/elevation sheets for bridge and wall construction, and verify grades using basic surveying principles and tools.
• Coordinate materials sampling and testing with Caltrans, METS or other QA entities.
• Communicate with Caltrans REs, Structures Representative, contractor personnel, and agency stakeholders to resolve field issues.
• Assist with punch lists, closeout documentation, and final reports for structural work.
• Work flexibly, including days, nights, and/or weekends as required for heavy construction at elevated heights.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical school or associate degree.
• Previous Caltrans experience.
• Relevant industry certifications.
• Ability to interpret construction schedules.
• At least 10 years of experience in construction inspection and management.
• Valid driver's license and compliance with HDR's vehicle policy.
• Experience with Prolog, Primavera, or similar tools.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of related experience.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Strong problem‑solving and documentation abilities.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Successful completion of drug‑screening procedures prior to hiring, with ongoing random and event testing.

The expected compensation range for this position is $65,000 to $93,000, depending on skills, experience, education, and geographic location.
