Who You Are:

We are seeking to hire a Construction Inspector with knowledge and experience of construction standards and practices. The ideal candidate will have 3–7 years of experience performing construction inspection within Virginia, including work for VDOT. The Construction Inspector will oversee all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects, ensuring quality in accordance with plans and specifications, and contributing to a safe, efficient transportation system.

Responsibilities:

  1. Monitor contractor work to ensure quality control and contract compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance projects of routine to moderate complexity under the supervision of a Construction Manager or designee on VDOT projects.
  2. Inspect and monitor contractual field work including excavations, drainage, road surfaces, and structures.
  3. Document contractor's daily production rates.
  4. Coordinate work and inspection phases with contractor’s superintendent and agency personnel.
  5. Observe, document, and communicate with contractors regarding completion of all project elements, including identifying non-compliant work; take field measurements of pay items.
  6. Review placement and perform tests on construction materials.
  7. Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and engineering equipment.
  8. Oversee and enforce installation of erosion/siltation controls, work zones, and traffic control devices.
  9. Recommend changes to construction plans to address field conditions or achieve cost savings.
  10. Maintain comprehensive project records including daily diaries, materials notebooks, as-built plans, pay quantity records, and monthly estimates.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of highway construction inspection experience and working knowledge of:

  • Roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance/repair/rehabilitation methods, materials, standards, and specifications.
  • VDOT standards, manuals, and specifications.
  • Relevant certifications related to asphalt, concrete, pavement, or inspection.
  • Construction plans, symbols, and terminology.
  • Environmental, safety, and EEOC regulations.
  • Construction management software and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Mathematics including algebra and geometry.

The candidate should also be able to:

  • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Apply mathematical formulas for minor field adjustments.
  • Maintain detailed records and perform materials testing.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and the public.

Note: Various certifications may be required depending on the specific tasks assigned. Completion of the Inspector Trainee program may substitute for one year of experience.

Note: The pay rate for this position is subject to the maximum hourly rate listed in the current CEI Classification Hourly Rate Pay Limitations Memorandum.
