Job summary

Vertex is seeking an Environmental Scientist/Geologist for its Due Diligence group. The role involves performing Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessments with frequent travel to client project locations in the region, including the Houston area.

You will conduct field inspections, document conditions, and prepare reports for project stakeholders. Ideal candidates have at least 1 year of related experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to work outdoors on active sites.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year of work experience.
  • Preferred construction inspection/field services experience.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a field-based outdoor environment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel daily to project sites.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and willingness to obtain OSHA 10.

Job Description

The Environmental Scientist/Geologist in our Due Diligence group conduct Phase 1 and Phase II Assessments for our clients. Frequent travel to our client's project locations across the region is required. This role will require frequent travel in the Houston TX area.

Core Responsibilities
Work Product Creation, Project Management, Coordination with Team Members
  • Perform on-site construction inspections to verify work is completed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, contract documents, and project requirements.
  • Monitor and document construction activities, workmanship, materials, and progress throughout all phases of project execution.
  • Maintain detailed Daily Job Diaries documenting work activities, labor resources, equipment utilization, site conditions, and project progress.
  • Capture and maintain photographic documentation of construction activities, site conditions, deficiencies, disputed work, and unforeseen field conditions.
  • Track contractor progress against project schedules and identify potential delays or deviations from planned milestones.
  • Review construction plans, specifications, and related project documents to support inspection and reporting activities.
  • Prepare accurate field reports and communicate observations, concerns, and project updates to project stakeholders.
Operations
  • Conduct field inspections on active construction sites, often working extended hours in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and direct sun exposure.
  • Verify contractor compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations, permit requirements, and client contract provisions.
  • Monitor contractor staffing, equipment resources, and overall site operations to ensure work is progressing efficiently and in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Coordinate with contractors, project managers, owners, and other stakeholders to address field issues and maintain project progress.
  • Support project teams by identifying quality, safety, schedule, and compliance concerns and escalating issues when necessary.
  • Travel daily to active construction sites throughout the region to support project inspection activities.
  • Maintain flexibility to work occasional weekends, holidays, and non-traditional hours based on project and construction schedules.
Qualifications & Competencies
  • Minimum of 1 year of work experience
  • Previous construction, construction inspection, field services, or related industry experience preferred.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a field-based environment while maintaining professionalism and attention to detail.
  • Strong observational, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and navigate active construction sites safely.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites on a daily basis.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and a willingness to obtain or maintain required certifications, including OSHA 10.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand construction plans, specifications, drawings, and contract documents.
  • Working knowledge of construction methods, materials, and field inspection practices.
  • Understanding of applicable regulatory compliance requirements and construction quality standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to prepare detailed field reports, inspection documentation, and project records.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify deficiencies, compliance issues, and deviations from project requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accurate documentation and meeting reporting deadlines.
  • Basic knowledge of construction scheduling and progress tracking methodologies.
