Job summary

City of Athens, TX seeks a skilled Construction Inspector to perform inspections of municipal infrastructure, including utility, roadway, drainage, pavement, subdivision, and commercial development projects to ensure compliance with approved plans and City standards.

You will review staking, line and grade, and testing reports, coordinate with contractors and City staff, and document progress with inspection reports, photos, and field notes to support Utilities and Public Works.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in municipal utility construction or related fields.
  • Associate degree or college coursework in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, Public Works, or related field preferred.
  • Experience inspecting water, wastewater, drainage, street, concrete and asphalt pavement construction preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections of public infrastructure, utility, roadway, drainage, subdivision, commercial development, and capital improvement projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, permits, and City standards.
  • Inspect installation of water distribution, wastewater collection, storm drainage, pavement, concrete, curb and gutter, sidewalk, and related public infrastructure improvements.
  • Review staking, line and grade, dimensions, elevations, materials, and testing reports to verify compliance with project requirements.
  • Coordinate with contractors, developers, engineers, testing laboratories, utility providers, and City staff regarding construction activities and inspection findings.
  • Document project progress through daily inspection reports, photographs, field notes, and related construction records.
  • Identify deficient work and notify appropriate parties of required corrective actions.
  • Monitor construction activities for compliance with traffic control, erosion control, trench.

Job Summary

Performs skilled construction inspection work for municipal infrastructure and development projects. Inspects utility, roadway, drainage, pavement, subdivision, and commercial development improvements to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, City standards, and applicable regulations. Provides technical inspection support to the Utilities and Public Works Departments.

Essential Job Functions
  • Performs inspections of public infrastructure, utility, roadway, drainage, subdivision, commercial development, and capital improvement projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, permits, and City standards.
  • Inspects installation of water distribution, wastewater collection, storm drainage, pavement, concrete, curb and gutter, sidewalk, and related public infrastructure improvements.
  • Reviews construction staking, line and grade, dimensions, elevations, materials, and testing reports to verify compliance with project requirements.
  • Coordinates with contractors, developers, engineers, testing laboratories, utility providers, and City staff regarding construction activities and inspection findings.

Safety, And Other Applicable Safety Requirements
  • Assists with project closeout activities, final inspections, warranty inspections, and acceptance of completed improvements.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints related to construction and development activities.
  • Provides inspection support to the Utilities and Public Works Departments.
  • Adheres to City policies, departmental procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of municipal utility, roadway, drainage, pavement, and site development construction practices and inspection procedures.
  • Knowledge of construction testing requirements, traffic control, erosion control, trench safety, and applicable construction standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, permits, standard details, and City construction standards.
  • Ability to identify construction deficiencies, document findings, maintain accurate records, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, developers, City personnel, and the public.
Education and Experience
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in municipal utility construction, public works construction, roadway construction, subdivision development, commercial site development, construction inspection, or related infrastructure projects.
  • Associate degree or college coursework in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, Public Works, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience inspecting water, wastewater, drainage, street, concrete, and asphalt pavement construction is preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position may be considered.
Special Qualifications
  • Valid Texas Driver's License required.
  • Ability to obtain certifications relevant to construction inspection and public infrastructure as required by the City.
  • APWA Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector (CPII), NICET, ICC, ACI, TxDOT, or related certifications are preferred.
