Job description

At Roundhouse, our mission is simple and serious: putting humanity into housing. Since 2008 we have grown into a developer and manager of diverse real estate across four states, with more than 10,000 multifamily units and over $2B in assets under management. We got here by challenging the status quo, taking the long view, and trusting people who show up with both technical depth and a willingness to get their hands dirty.

Our culture

One Team: We put people first, work with humility, and celebrate wins together.

Self-Starter: We take initiative, own outcomes, and push ideas forward with energy and purpose.

Forward Thinker: We stay curious, embrace change, and explore better ways to serve our residents and partners.

Commitment to Excellence: We set high standards, double-check details, and take pride in doing the work right.

About The Role

The Field Engineer is a dual-track entry-to-mid-level role that bridges field operations and project administration. You support the Superintendent in directing daily field work while also owning the technical and documentation responsibilities that keep the project moving. You report to the Site-Specific Project Superintendent and are actively developing the skills to advance into a Superintendent role.

What You'll Own
Field operations and scheduling
  • Support the Superintendent in managing daily on-site construction activities, coordinating labor, materials, and equipment for efficient execution.
  • Help develop, maintain, and communicate the project schedule, including four-week look-aheads and daily work plans.
  • Supervise and coordinate subcontractors and trades in the field, directing daily work to keep crews productive and on schedule.
  • Conduct daily site walks, lead foremen huddles, and run coordination meetings in the Superintendent's absence.
  • Manage site logistics: laydown areas, deliveries, hoisting, access, and housekeeping.
Technical and project engineering support
  • Track and monitor open RFIs and submittals, understand their impact on schedule and sequencing, and communicate priorities and unresolved conflicts to the team before they become field problems.
  • Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents to answer field questions.
  • Support preconstruction tasks including constructability reviews and quantity takeoffs.
Safety and compliance
  • Enforce all OSHA, jobsite, and company health and safety requirements, and stop work for unsafe conditions.
  • Coordinate and document daily safety inspections, toolbox talks, and pre-task plans.
  • Help coordinate inspections with the AHJ and verify work complies with permits and applicable codes.
  • Investigate and document incidents, near-misses, and corrective actions.
Documentation and reporting
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, field logs, and as-built drawings, tracking manpower, quantities, and productivity.
  • Prepare progress photos, field reports, and daily manpower reports by subcontractor and trade.
  • Provide timely updates to the Superintendent and Project Manager, flagging issues early with proposed solutions.
Quality control
  • Perform quality-control inspections, document deficiencies, and direct rework to specification.
  • Support punch-list development and drive items to completion ahead of substantial completion.
  • Coordinate with the owner, architect, and inspectors on field and technical matters.
  • Assist with project closeout, compiling documentation, warranties, and as-builts.
Hands-on field support
  • Grab tools and get in the work when the situation calls for it: fix a handrail, caulk fire penetrations, adjust hardware, or handle other minor finish tasks to keep inspections on track and punch lists moving.
  • Complete critical punch-list items directly ahead of walks and city inspections so the project is ready when it needs to be.
  • Operate site equipment including telehandlers and material lifts to move and stage materials, assist subcontractors with loading, and support efficient site logistics.
What You Bring
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1 to 4 years of experience in multifamily or comparable construction (field experience, internship, or project engineering background all considered).
  • The ability to read and interpret plans, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills, comfortable in a fast-paced field environment.
  • Strong organization, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong collaboration skills with subcontractors, trades, and the broader project team.
A Leg Up If You Have
  • Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, or similar construction management software.
  • OSHA 10- or 30-Hour certification.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
