Job summary

Synerfac Technical Staffing is seeking a Construction Estimator (Civil) in Wilmington, DE. You will support bidding, planning, and management of heavy construction projects, and work under the Senior Estimator/Project Managers to bid and manage roads, utilities, water/sewer, and concrete work statewide.

Bachelor's in engineering is preferred; 2–5+ years in heavy civil with strong MS Office skills and leadership abilities are expected, with PE track potential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 2–5+ years of heavy civil construction experience with estimating and project management.
  • Strong understanding of roadway, utility, and concrete construction methods.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with estimating or project management software is a plus.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with owners, field teams, clients, and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead detailed quantity takeoffs, cost estimating, and bid preparation for heavy civil construction projects.
  • Review plans, specifications, and contract documents to develop accurate bids.
  • Solicit, review, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing.
  • Prepare bid proposals, scopes of work, and value engineering alternatives.
  • Participate in bid strategy meetings and support final bid reviews with leadership.
  • Oversee projects from award through closeout, ensuring scope, schedule, budget, and quality adherence.
  • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, cost forecasts, and change orders.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and internal field staff.
  • Monitor job costs, productivity, and cash flow; resolve issues proactively.
  • Ensure compliance with contract documents, safety regulations, and quality standards.
  • Serve as primary contact for owners, engineers, and municipal agencies.
  • Collaborate with field supervisors to promote safe, productive job sites.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating and project management processes.
  • Support business development through client relationships and repeat work.

As an Project/Estimating Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the bidding, planning, and management of heavy construction projects.

Position Overview

They are seeking a construction Estimator with a desire to estimate and manage heavy construction projects. Under the guidance of Senior Estimator/Project Managers, this position is responsible for bidding and securing heavy civil construction projects and once projects are awarded, manage the contract work from start to finish. The types of projects include Roadways, Utilities, Water and Sewer Services, and Concrete throughout the State of Delaware and surrounding areas.

Bachelor's degree in Engineering strongly preferred and this role will provide the experience required to sit for PE.

To be successful in this role, candidates must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as strong communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Estimating & Preconstruction:
    • Lead detailed quantity takeoffs, cost estimating, and bid preparation for heavy civil construction projects including roadways, utilities, water/sewer, and concrete infrastructure
    • Review plans, specifications, and contract documents to develop accurate and competitive bids
    • Solicit, review, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing
    • Prepare bid proposals, scopes of work, and value engineering alternatives
    • Participate in bid strategy meetings and support final bid reviews with leadership
  • Project Management:
    • Oversee projects from award through closeout, ensuring adherence to scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements
    • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, cost forecasts, and change orders
    • Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and internal field staff
    • Monitor job costs, productivity, and cash flow; proactively identify and resolve issues
    • Ensure compliance with contract documents, safety regulations, and company quality standards
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for owners, engineers, and municipal agencies
  • Leadership & Mentorship:
    • Collaborate with field supervisors to promote efficient, safe, and productive job sites

Qualifications
  • Bachelor"s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (preferred)
  • 2-5+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, with demonstrated estimating and project management responsibility
  • Strong understanding of roadway, utility, and concrete construction methods
  • Proven experience managing multiple projects and bid efforts simultaneously
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with estimating or project management software is a plus
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively with ownership, field teams, clients, and subcontractors
