Job summary

CFS, a growing construction company in Texas, seeks a Construction Controller to oversee project accounting, financial reporting, and operational finance across multiple active projects and entities.

You will partner with senior leadership, manage day-to-day accounting, ensure GAAP compliance, monitor cash flow and WIP, lead month-end close, and drive process improvements and internal controls.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience within the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and WIP reporting.
  • Experience managing project accounting for commercial construction projects.
  • Proven ability to lead accounting teams and develop staff.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, financial reporting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable activities.
  • Serve as the primary financial resource for project managers and operations teams regarding project accounting matters.
  • Ensure compliance with company accounting policies, internal controls, and GAAP requirements.
  • Manage project billing processes, contract reviews, and customer invoicing requirements.
  • Monitor project cash flow, profitability, and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules.
  • Analyze project performance, identify financial risks, and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, accruals, and financial statement preparation.
  • Collaborate with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning initiatives.
  • Review contract terms to ensure proper treatment of billing schedules, retainage, and project revenue recognition.
  • Support internal and external audit requests and maintain organized financial documentation.
  • Develop, mentor, and manage accounting team members while promoting best practices and process consistency.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts by enhancing reporting tools, workflows, and financial processes.

Preferred Qualifications For The Controller
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience within the construction industry
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and WIP reporting
  • Experience managing project accounting for commercial construction projects
  • Understanding of contract billing, retainage, lien regulations, and construction financial practices
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights
  • Experience leading accounting teams and developing staff
  • Advanced proficiency with ERP/accounting systems and Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively across finance, operations, and executive leadership teams
