We’re a commercial and industrial general contractor based in Elk Grove Village with a 15+ year track record delivering complex projects across distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, food production, healthcare, and technology. We’re a lean, high-performing team that runs $1M–$20M projects and takes pride in repeat client relationships.
We’re looking for a Controller who has lived inside construction accounting: someone who can build a G702/G703 in their sleep, knows why a sworn statement has to tie out to the penny before a title company will fund a draw, and has closed months in a job-cost system, not just a general ledger.
This is not a general corporate accounting role. If you haven’t worked on the finance side of a general contractor or subcontractor, this position isn’t the right fit.
This role reports directly to the Principals. You’ll run day-to-day accounting with support from other members of our team, and you’ll be a key partner as we grow our finance arm: better forecasting, sharper job profitability, stronger banking and bonding relationships, and over time, the team to support it.
What You’ll Own
- Owner billing: AIA G702/G703 pay applications, schedules of values, retainage, and backup documentation, prepared each month alongside the PMs
- Construction draws: contractor’s sworn statements, partial and final lien waivers from every tier, and coordinating draw funding with title companies, lenders, and construction escrow
- Subcontractor and supplier compliance: no payment without the right waiver, sworn statement, and current insurance certificate
- Accounts payable: invoice coding to job and cost code, PM approvals, check and ACH runs, 1099s
- Accounts receivable: billing follow-up, collections, retainage release, and aging management
- Payroll: field and office payroll, including certified/prevailing wage payroll when a project requires it
- Job costing and WIP: cost accuracy in ComputerEase, monthly WIP schedule, over/under billings, and cost-to-complete reviews with the PMs
- Month-end close: bank and credit card reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and financial statements for the company and its affiliated real estate entities
- Cash management: weekly cash position and a rolling cash flow forecast the Principals can actually make decisions from
- Outside relationships: CPA (year-end and tax), bank (line of credit and covenants), surety (bonding capacity and financial submissions), and insurance broker (annual GL and workers’ comp audits)
- Budgeting, job profitability reporting, and financial planning with the Principals
- Internal controls: approval workflows, segregation of duties, and documented procedures that hold up as we grow
- Supervising and developing accounting support staff
What We’re Looking For
- 7+ years of construction accounting experience, including 3+ years at the Controller or Assistant Controller level with a GC or subcontractor
- Hands‑on, recent experience with G702/G703 pay applications, sworn statements, lien waivers, and title company draws (this is non‑negotiable)
- Illinois construction experience strongly preferred; you know how draws, waivers, and the Mechanics Lien Act work here
- ComputerEase experience strongly preferred; experience in another construction ERP (Sage/Timberline, Foundation, Viewpoint, CMiC) considered
- Working knowledge of construction revenue recognition, percentage‑of‑completion, and WIP reporting
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred; substantial construction accounting experience considered in lieu. CPA a plus, not required
- Advanced Excel; Procore familiarity a plus
- Comfortable working directly with owners: you’ll tell the Principals what they need to hear, not what they want to hear
- A working Controller: you’re as comfortable running a payroll as presenting a WIP schedule
- Absolute discretion with company, payroll, and ownership financial information
- Stable work history; we’re a small team and continuity matters
What We Offer
- 401(k) with employer match
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- Life and disability insurance
- Paid time off: holidays, vacation, sick days
- Annual company events (we actually like each other)
- Office location in Elk Grove Village
Who We Are
We have low turnover for a reason. We’re a lean team that does serious work, with a straightforward culture and a reputation built on doing what we say we’re going to do. Our Controller sits at the same table as the Principals; you’ll see every project, every number, and every decision. If you want to be one of many in a corporate accounting department, this isn’t the place. If you want to help build the finance side of a growing contractor, it is.
