This role is ideal for a hands-on, detail-oriented accountant with construction industry experience who takes ownership and works independently.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Prepare and oversee timely and accurate monthly financial statements, account reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy and integrity of the trial balance
  • Manage construction accounting processes, including job costing, WIP reporting, over/under billings, committed costs, and project profitability analysis
  • Manage AIA/progress billing, retainage, change orders, and related project accounting processes
  • Oversee accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and depreciation schedules
  • Develop and analyze cash flow forecasts and assist with cash management
  • Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance analysis
  • Oversee payroll processing and compliance, including union payroll, union benefit reporting, dues, fringes, and other required remittances
  • Oversee prevailing wage and certified payroll compliance when applicable, including Davis-Bacon and state prevailing wage requirements

  • Work closely with project managers, operations, payroll, HR, and other departments to resolve accounting and operational issues
  • Provide management with meaningful financial reporting and analysis to support business decisions
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, efficiency, and accuracy
  • Independently take accounting and compliance issues from identification through research, resolution, documentation, and implementation
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For:

  • Construction Accounting Expertise: Strong understanding of construction accounting, including job costing, progress billing, WIP, retainage, project profitability, and month-end financial reporting
  • Union Payroll Knowledge: Experience with union payroll, fringe benefit reporting, payroll compliance, and collective bargaining agreement requirements preferred
  • Ownership & Accountability: Takes responsibility for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial information and follows issues through to resolution
  • Independent Problem Solving: Able to research unfamiliar accounting, tax, payroll, or compliance issues and develop well-supported solutions with limited direction
  • Organization & Prioritization: Effectively manages recurring deadlines, competing priorities, and unexpected issues while maintaining accuracy
  • Attention to Detail: Produces accurate and consistent financial information and identifies discrepancies before work is finalized
  • Communication: Communicates financial and accounting information clearly and professionally with management, employees, project managers, vendors, and outside partners
  • Teamwork: Works collaboratively across departments while maintaining appropriate accounting controls and accountability
  • Professionalism & Integrity: Demonstrates sound judgment, confidentiality, ethical decision-making, and professionalism
  • Continuous Improvement: Looks for opportunities to improve processes, controls, reporting, and efficiency rather than simply maintaining existing procedures
  • Adaptability: Able to shift between priorities and respond effectively to unplanned issues and interruptions in a fast-paced environment

Job Requirements/Specifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience

  • Experience with union payroll and construction job costing strongly preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong overall computer skills
