Job summary

The Shelly Company in Ohio seeks an Area Manager to oversee field and plant operations with P/L responsibility for construction and paving activities. You will collaborate with Divisional Operations to meet profitability goals, manage personnel, and develop customer relationships within the region.

Responsibilities include supervising costs, safety, scheduling, and subcontract/PO approvals, while driving quality and compliance with company policies. Travel and flexible hours may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and related experience in paving production and laydown.
  • Proficient with Windows, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with safety and quality focus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee construction costing in line with safety procedures and business plan.
  • Review work plans with forepersons to ensure safety, quality and efficiency.
  • Maintain scheduling for area jobs and plants and coordinate production.
  • Review financial reports such as weekly job costs and monthly totals.
  • Maintain customer relations and public/community involvement.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental and company policies.

The Shelly Company-Full Time-Operations, Field and Plant Mgmt

Position Overview

Oversight of Project Management and Operational responsibilities within the designated area to ensure projects are constructed in a safe, profitable, and efficient manner and that a quality product is delivered. This position will have P/L responsibility for all Construction and paving-related activities within the designated area. This position will work closely with Divisional Operations and is expected to understand and achieve the goals of the Business Unit’s plans for profitability. The Area Manager will have a responsibility to ensure that company policies and goals are promoted and performance of the workforce is in line with these objectives. It is expected that this position will develop and maintain a good relationship with the customer base of their region and promote positive public relations within the communities in which we work. Development of personnel through proper supervision, evaluations, and mentoring will be necessary to provide proper retention and succession needs of the company.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage construction costing in line with company safety procedures and business plan.
  • Review work plans with area Forepersons to ensure safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Maintain operational scheduling for area jobs and plants.
  • Coordinate plant production for internal and external sales.
  • Review and update financial reports – weekly job costs, monthly CTC and others
  • Customer relations with area customers and suppliers.
  • Maintain public relations through donations, advertising, and community service.
  • Approve various job related invoices.
  • Assurance of compliance with DBE and EDGE goals on area projects.
  • Negotiate extra work, changed conditions, and claims on area projects.
  • Investigate and mitigate quality and customer problems on area jobs with assistance of QA/QC lab where applicable.
  • Assure clear understanding of job specifications, requirements, and customer expectations to area, project managers, and forepersons on area jobs.
  • Assure compliance of personnel working in area to company safety, environmental, ethics policies, and proper reporting of such.
  • Professional development and annual review of personnel assigned to area.
  • Review and approval of subcontracts and purchase orders for materials used on area jobs.
  • Conduct or attend internal preconstruction meetings for all projects a minimum of one week prior to start of work.
Other Requirements:
  • Must obtain a CESSWI License for Construction erosion and sediment inspection.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.
  • Strict adherence to Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all Shelly Company employees. Employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company policies, procedures, and applicable laws.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning, assigning, and directing work.
  • Willingness to develop subordinates’ technical and leadership skills and make recommendations for new job opportunities when appropriate.
  • Effective management of employee performance through coaching, feedback (written and verbal), rewards, and discipline when necessary.
  • Addressing complaints and resolving problems in a timely manner.
  • Ability to get work done through others using effective delegation, scheduling, and time management practices.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from four-year College or technical school; or four to six years related experience in paving production and laydown, Knowledge of paver set up, and ODOT specification (specifically specs 448 449 446 447), Understanding of density specifications and equipment required to obtain these specifications. Knowledge of drainage specifications and installation, GPS and LPS machine control, aggregate base installation and specifications, Earthwork (Embankment-Excavation Specification). Experience in concrete form-pour and mix specification and testing requirements and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficient with Windows, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move more than 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud and may require protective equipment.
