Responsibilities

Job Description

Nemours is seeking a Constable II to join our team in Wilmington, DE. The Constable II provides protection for staff, patients, visitors and associates by maintaining peace and order at Nemours Children’s Hospital. The Constable II works in an armed capacity with a firearm and a taser.

Primary Functions

• Patrol hospital buildings, stairwells, and grounds both on foot and in vehicles to monitor interior and exterior and ensure doors are secure.
• Prevent, detect, investigate and report unlawful and unsafe activities within the hospital and contiguous properties. Investigations include interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects, collecting, reviewing, preserving evidence, and conducting searches and surveillance.
• Apply non-violent verbal intervention and de‑escalation skills to mitigate disruptive behavior and dangerous activity; verbally de-escalate hostile situations and physically separate and control combative individuals.
• Provide first responder assessment of threats against staff, patients, and families.
• Conduct fire, evacuation, and miscellaneous emergency management drills as required by the State of Delaware, the Joint Commission, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
• Control access into the hospital and specific areas; enforce visitor restrictions and limitation measures instituted by the hospital.
• Provide one‑on‑one patient monitoring for inpatient units; assist aggressive or unstable patients; escort patients in custody or visitors with history of aggressive behavior or domestic issues; perform patient searches; sanitize rooms for suicidal/homicidal patients.
• Exercise powers of detention and arrest when necessary.
• Manage Public Safety entry stations that control access to the campus.
• Respond to various types of alarms: door alarms, motion detectors, duress alarms, fire alarms, medical emergency alarms, and other Public Safety incidents.
• Escort unauthorized individuals from the campus and prevent patient elopement and abduction.
• Perform all assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental rules and practices; report to supervisors in a timely fashion any activities or conditions that violate established processes.
• Assist with crowd control and evacuations when required.
• Provide safe vehicle transportation or ambulance support for patients and families, as needed.
• Enforce parking and traffic control.

Requirements

• State of Delaware Constable License required.
• High School Diploma required; one year of specialized training beyond high school required.
• Valid State Driver’s license and ability to operate authorized hospital vehicles.
• Successfully pass a criminal background check and MMPI testing (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory).
• Maintain certification as a Constable in accordance with Delaware State Police Professional Licensing requirements under Delaware Code (Title 10, Chapter 56).
• Maintain certification in the use of a taser through Certified Axon Instructor.
• Maintain CPR and AED certifications.
