Job summary

Travis County is seeking a lead/senior Deputy Constable to enforce local, state, and federal laws, serve civil and criminal process, and oversee a special detail within the constable's office. The role involves significant investigatory duties with minimal supervision.

Preferred candidates are bilingual (Spanish) and hold an active TCOLE license with two years of law enforcement experience. Location is Austin, TX with extensive field responsibilities.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalency with no felony convictions.
• Must be at least 21 years old; 18+ with 60 college hours or 2 years military service (honorable discharge).
• Active TCOLE license and basic certification as a law enforcement officer.

Responsibilities

• Deliver and execute civil process papers; maintain records of executions.
• Seize property under court orders and hold auctions on levied property.
• Enforce laws and serve as liaison to agencies and the public.
• Serve warrants, make arrests and act as bailiff for JP court.
• Respond to emergencies and train/advise Deputy Constables.

Job description

Performs timely service of all criminal and civil processes issued by the courts and enforces local, state and federal laws. This classification serves as a lead/senior level and/or oversees a special detail of a program within the constable's office and engages in investigatory duties with minimal supervision as required by the department.

Duties and responsibilities

Enforce local, state and federal laws and serve as a liaison to other agencies and the public. Minimum requirements: By state statute, requires a High School diploma or equivalency certificate with no felony convictions. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be honorably discharged from the Military and any law enforcement agency. Requires Advanced or higher certification as a law enforcement officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Requires active TCOLE License.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This job is within the Non-TCSO POPS job family. It is a second level job within the uniformed Constable series. This job is distinguished from the Deputy Constable job by the additional experience and testing required to obtain this level.

• Delivers and executes civil process papers; maintains records and files of executions received.
• Seizes property under court orders and holds auction on levied property.
• Enforces local, state, federal, and compulsory school attendance laws as required.
• Responds to inquiries and serves as liaison to other agencies and the public.
• Transports prisoners to jail and may transport persons committed to mental institutions to state hospital.
• Serves warrants, makes arrests.
• Serves as a bailiff for Justice of the Peace court.
• Responds to major emergencies and disasters.
• Assists with decisions concerning a law enforcement unit, and trains, educates and assists new Deputy Constables.

May perform the following additional duties (varies with the precinct assigned):

• Provides building security services and person inspections.
• May perform traffic related functions.
• Checks title and serial numbers on vehicles, maintains patrol vehicles, and searches for missing persons.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Requires a High School diploma or equivalency certificate with no felony convictions. Must be at least 21 years of age or at least 18 years of age with 60 or more hours of accredited college credits or 2 years of military service with an honorable discharge.

• Requires basic certification as a law enforcement officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
• Requires two (2) years of law enforcement experience.
• Active Peace Officer License

• Intermediate or higher law enforcement officer certification from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
• Civil Process Proficiency certification from TCOLE.

Constant standing, handling, use of vision, depth perception. Frequent reaching, forceful gripping, use of fine dexterity. Occasional sitting, walking, climbing, kneeling/crouching, bending/squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, talking. Exposure to excessive heat and cold (outdoor conditions); job may involve danger due to contact with criminals and suspects. Must be able to perform physical functions associated with operating a motor vehicle, safely operate a firearm, radio equipment and computer equipment.

Work Hours: M-Th (10 hrs.) or Tu-F (10 hrs.); Works some nights, holidays, and weekends.
