Job summary

Stanford University Libraries is seeking a Head of Conservation Services to lead a small team and direct the care of books, manuscripts, and other analog materials. The role is based at the Stanford Redwood City campus with opportunities to support conservation across Stanford Libraries’ network.

You will plan and oversee conservation treatment, exhibitions, and long-term preservation while collaborating with curators, librarians, archivists, and technical staff in a complex academic environment.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in conservation or related field.
• Five or more years in an established conservation lab for a research library or related institution.
• MLIS or MLS from an ALA-accredited program preferred.

Responsibilities

• Manage daily operations of Conservation Services; supervise staff and coordinate workflows.
• Lead staff development, hiring, training and fostering an inclusive work environment.
• Oversee conservation treatment decisions and coordination with external vendors.
• Support exhibit loans and conservation for local, national, and international venues.
• Administer treatment reports and develop new workflows and policies.
• Collaborate with Preservation leadership to align with strategic priorities.
• Advise on collection storage and quarantine, including mold and pest assessments.
• Represent Stanford Libraries in regional, national, and international activities.
