Job summary

OpenAI is seeking an Operating Systems Engineer focused on connectivity and networking to design, develop, and maintain the OS capabilities that enable reliable, secure communication across OpenAI products and systems.

You will work across Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, IP networking, and network services, collaborating with hardware, security, platform, and software teams to ship maintainable interfaces and high‑performance networking features. This role is based in San Francisco and on‑site at OpenAI.

Qualifications

• Substantial hands‑on experience developing Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth in OS frameworks or connectivity middleware.
• Strong understanding of IP networking (IPv4/IPv6, TCP/UDP, DNS, DHCP, routing).
• Experience in routing, VPNs, traffic management, or network isolation.
• Experience designing platform APIs and services, including lifecycle management and integration with OS components.
• Proficiency in C++ for systems development, including concurrency and memory management.
• Strong understanding of asynchronous systems, interprocess communication, and failure handling.
• Experience diagnosing connectivity issues using traces, logs, and debugging tools.
• Ability to work across disciplines and make sound technical tradeoffs.

Responsibilities

• Build connectivity foundations: design and maintain OS services for Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and IP networking.
• Develop reusable network capabilities: connection management, configuration, routing, service discovery.
• Enable secure communication: policies for secure communication and traffic isolation.
• Resolve issues across the stack: investigate correctness, concurrency, interoperability, and reliability.
• Improve performance and efficiency: use tracing and profiling to reduce latency and power usage.
• Validate real‑world reliability: create tests and workloads to validate interoperability and failure recovery.
• Deliver maintainable product capabilities: collaborate with hardware, security, platform, and app engineers to ship clear interfaces.
