Job summary

Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer is seeking a Conflicts Attorney to support conflicts of interest, new business intake and client due diligence in New York. The role reports to Heads of Conflicts and sits within a fast-paced, global firm.

You will advise on ethics and regulatory questions under US law, escalate complex clearances, and collaborate with the NBI, Financial Crime, and IHC teams to manage risk and facilitate smooth onboarding of new matters and lateral hires.

Qualifications

• Admitted as an Attorney in New York or another US State.
• Prior experience in conflicts of interests is preferred but not essential as full training will be provided.
• Excellent research and analytical skills with a focus on accuracy.
• Demonstrated commercial awareness and understanding of risk in a law firm environment.
• Ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize multiple deadlines.
• Effective verbal, written and face-to-face communication skills with a variety of staff.

Responsibilities

• Provide assistance, support, and analysis to the firm on conflicts, new business intake, and client due diligence.
• Assess potential new clients and matters under applicable rules; collaborate with the Financial Crime team as needed.
• Consult with Conflicts Analysts and foreign-qualified lawyers on legal/ethical questions under US law; escalate complex clearances.
• Facilitate resolution of commercial conflicts by presenting business justifications for instructions.
• Review conflicts provisions, outside counsel guidelines, and RFPs; draft waivers as appropriate.
• Support onboarding and matter openings for lateral partners; coordinate with recruiting and leadership teams.
